Does law enforcement need informal leaders to step up to help the new generation more than ever? What are your thoughts?

Informal leaders in law enforcement are needed more than ever to help the next generation of officers to learn how to be effective officers and thrive in their careers.

UPDATE ON TROOPER SHOT IN WALLA WALLA:

“This evening we were once again reminded of how dangerous the profession of law enforcement can be when one of our troopers was involved in a critical incident while on duty in Walla Walla. We were also reminded of how strong and resolute our people can be when Trooper Dean Atkinson though seriously injured, found the strength to drive himself to the hospital. Trooper Atkinson is a five year veteran of the Washington State Patrol and I am both relieved and happy to announce he is now in stable condition.

Let me say thank you to the outpouring of support from the public. I am sure it is and will be appreciated by Trooper Atkinson and his loved ones and indeed all of the men and women in law enforcement in our state. Though there is certainly danger and cruelty in our world, there is also courage and grace, and for that we are thankful just as we are thankful for this fine young trooper's service and survival.”

- Chief John R. Batiste

An independent investigation of the incident is being conducted by the Special Investigations Unit of the Walla Walla Police Department. Below is a media release from the department:

On September 22, 2022, at 5:07 pm Walla Walla area police officers were dispatched to a report of an officer shot on W. Poplar Street near Avery. Further information provided by witnesses indicated the victim was a Washington State Patrol Trooper, later identified as Trooper Dean Atkinson Jr.

Local officers responded to the scene and secured evidence related to the incident. Several minutes later, Milton-Freewater, Oregon police officers attempted to stop a vehicle matching the description from the shooting. Local officers responded towards the Oregon state line and were involved in a short vehicle pursuit with the vehicle before the pursuit came to an end on Hwy 125 north of Stateline Rd.

Brandon Dennis O’Neel DOB 7-16-1985, was taken into custody and transported to the Walla Walla County Jail where he will be booked on allegations stemming from his suspected involved in this incident. Trooper Atkinson was treated at Providence Medical center in Walla Walla and then transported to Harborview Medical Center for additional care.

Walla Walla Police Chief Chris Buttice requested the assistance of the regional Special Investigations Unit or SIU to conduct the investigation of this incident. Any additional information will be released by the SIU as it becomes available.

Any persons with additional information related to this incident are requested to contact one of the SIU sergeants listed below:

One year ago today, I launched the Boukabou Solutions blog.

I am still in the infancy of pursuing this endeavor, but I have a vision about making a positive difference in my community by helping you thrive, not just survive, in your first responder career. To do this, we must explore solutions to the challenges of maintaining and improving wellness and resilience while serving in these professions.

Question: Is it reasonable to expect that you will retire better off than when you started your LE career? Is it possible to thrive in these careers?

"YES! You deserve to be better off when you retire than when you started. I know this should seem obvious, but we don’t always act like it.
Are you on-course for that to be true? Are you thriving?"

🚨If you are in the first responder community in the state of Washington and you have not heard of Code 4 Northwest, it is an incredibly valuable resource, which is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides free confidential help 24/7.

The organization is committed to being there for first responders, even for those that separated as a result of vaccination mandates. I am grateful for this resource and its commitment to serving this community.

An important deadline passed affecting many officers (and other first responders and support staff) in Washington State. Decision to vaccinate and provide proof of vaccination versus not complying with the mandate.

Decisions have been made, which will have tremendous impact on the lives of many and their families. No matter what decision was made, many will need support through a stressful time.

Officers in Washington State (and across the country) have been dealing with multiple sources of stress including: nationwide criticism of police, protests and riots, effects of COVID-19 pandemic, and significant changes brought on by police reform and legislation.

These challenging circumstances will mean that some officers will need some support. It takes courage to ask for help.

Code4 NW is a great resource for those seeking support.

State of Washington has one of the lowest per capita ratios of police officers to its population.

Significant changes in the state’s laws governing permissible use of force, equipment and tactics, and peace officer decertification took effect on July 25th, 2021.

Recently, state, King County, and Seattle officials declared a vaccine mandate for their employees. Consequently, peace officers are required to be fully vaccinated by October 18th to qualify for continued employment. Employees that are not granted a medical or religious exemption are subject to termination.

Anxiety | Fear | Frustration - common and at substantial levels in WA State among law enforcement officers.

🚨LEOs - please take the time to address the understandably high level of emotions right now by using strategies that help you make thoughtful decisions about what is best for you, your families, and your values and beliefs.

Reach out to a trusted confidant/mentor. Many THINK by TALKING those thoughts and emotions out loud. Many need to take a moment to calm the mind and practice mindfulness - maybe in a quiet space at home, outdoors in the wilderness, or wherever you need. Share resources that are available to you and your team to get through this challenging and emotional time.

YOU’RE NOT ALONE. Not in LE. In challenging times, the LE family must grow stronger. Take care of each other.

Fentanyl is a potent substance that can cause an inadvertent overdose in law enforcement. Many law enforcement agencies are equipped with Naloxone (often under the brand name of Narcan) nasal sprays, which can reverse the life threatening effects of narcotics such as Fentanyl. Please share this video from San Diego County Sheriff’s Department to remind law enforcement to remain vigilant and mitigate potential inadvertent exposures. And if an exposure occurs, please remember that proper administration of available Naloxone and rapid activation of EMS may save a life.

Take care and stay vigilant.
