Chad Smith
Joins NAFB as
News Service Editor

PLATTE CITY, Mo. (August 15, 2024) – The National Association of Farm Broadcasting (NAFB) announces the addition of broadcast veteran Chad Smith as NAFB News Service editor. Smith joins NAFB after serving as a contract editor and reporter for the News Service for more than 10 years.

Smith manages the daily and ongoing operations of the NAFB News Service, including editing, creating new content and delivering stories provided by member broadcasters. He brings more than 30 years of experience as an award-winning broadcast journalist.

"Bringing Chad on board at NAFB in a full-time role was a natural choice," says Gardner Hatch, NAFB executive director. "He brings tremendous experience and creativity to the News Service position as we look to expand the resources and services that it provides to our Broadcast and Allied Industry Council members."

In addition to his work with the association, Smith has also served as farm director and morning show host at KLGR Radio in Redwood Falls, MN; assistant sports editor and production manager at KWAT/KIXX/KDLO Radio in Watertown, SD; and a freelance journalist and media consultant.

"We send a big welcome to Chad as he steps into this full-time role and look forward to continuing to provide the great news service NAFB members value as part of their membership," says Carah Hart, 2024 NAFB president and anchor/reporter at Brownfield Ag News.

Adds Smith: "Working in farm radio has been a passion of mine for a long time. I am looking forward to leading and growing the News Service and helping farm broadcasters do their jobs by delivering the content and resources that they need."

The News Service is NAFB's in-house ag news production and distribution service that reaches farmers, ranchers and other rural audiences across the country. Farm broadcasters rely on the service daily to access regional and national agriculture news. It also connects ag companies, trade associations and government agencies with farm broadcasters and rural America through its audio news release distribution services.

NAFB is a non-profit professional organization whose mission is to lead, promote, and support growth in agricultural and rural broadcasting for the benefit of its members, audiences, and industry.

So, I'm working my way toward the end of the Book of Mark this morning and found something interesting. You'll note some difference in the way the same events are described in each of the four Gospels. This book says so and so was there while the same person isn't mentioned in the other Gospels. So, why the differences, and does that mean trouble for the authenticity?

Nope. Think about it this way. Witnesses of a traumatic event like a car crash or bank robbery all remember different details of what happened. Police generally can put together a pretty clear picture of events like that by talking to all the witnesses that were there, right?

If that's the case, doesn't the variation in details regarding the same events in different books of the Bible actually argue for the authenticity? I believe church leaders who created identical accounts in all four Gospels would create some serious concerns about truthfulness, don't you?

Just a thought.

Continuing to study the names of God: This week, it's Jehovah El Roi, or the God "who sees me." That means He knows you so well that He can count the number of hairs on your head. He knows everything about you.
He's watching the Earth so closely that He can tell when a single sparrow falls to the ground. That's hard to do. There are a LOT of sparrows. That same God who watches the Earth that closely is watching you too. He knows about your past, both the good and bad, where you are in the present, and He knows precisely where you are headed in the future.
That's how well known you are and how deeply you are cared for!

Mark 9:43 - "And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It's better for you to enter (the next) life maimed than to have two hands and go to Hell, the unquenchable fire."

This always confused me as a younger man. I thought He was talking about literal disfigurement. He's not at all talking about self mutilation. He's exaggerating to emphasize the point that avoiding sin is worth whatever drastic measures are required.

John MacArthur teaches it this way: "Jesus words are to be taken figuratively. No amount of self-mutilation can deal with sin, which is an issue of the heart."

Does that help clear it up a little?

I had a hard question the other day I couldn't answer, so I did what any good journalist would do. I dug in and did the research. Let me ask you: What DID happen to people who lived in the Old Testament when they died before the sacrifice of Jesus happened. Well, the answer is here.

I saw an interesting question the other day about the afterlife before the Resurrection of Jesus. That was a very interesting question to me because you don't go to Heaven if the sacrifice of Jesus doesn't cover your sins. A Holy God wants nothing to do with sin. That's why we want Him to see the sa...

Tuesday devo: The study notes at the bottom of my Bible shared something interesting today that I bet most of us (including me) didn't know.
The ministry of Jesus is written about in Jewish rabbinical writings. The first lesson is one I've shared before: He's not a fairy tale. He was a man who walked the Earth, breathed air, ate food, lived and died like a human, and claimed to be the Son of God. Either He was who He says He was, or He was clinically insane. I'll let you decide.
What the writing says is "On the eve of Passover, Yeshu (Jesus) was hanged. And an announcer went out in front of Him for 14 days saying, 'He is going to be stoned, because He practiced sorcery and led people astray." (Sanhedrin 43a, or Sota 47a).
While the rabbinical writings were obviously against Christianity, what I want you to understand is even the Jews who were lined up against Jesus during His ministry confirm that Jesus was a miracle worker opposed by the keepers of Jewish Tradition.
He was a MIRACLE worker! If that's not confirmation of the Truth, I don't know what is.
Don't take my word for it. Look into it for yourself. Don't let someone else tell you what to think about Jesus. Dig into it. I promise it's worth everything!
Have a great day :)

So... here's the headline on an email that showed up this morning in the NAFB inbox: "Grassley Launches Secret Service Investigation Following Assassination Attempt against Former President Trump."

Okay, but if it's secret, WHY do you announce it publicly? Can someone please explain like I'm three?

07/17/2024

Well, this was interesting. Reading in Matthew, Chapter 26:6-23, about a woman (John 12:3 reveals this was Mary, sister of Martha and Lazarus) who poured the fragrant oil on Jesus in preparation for burial. This took place while Jesus and His disciples were eating at the house of Simon the L***r. If you didn't know, leprosy is a serious skin disease, and Jews were not allowed to even talk to someone in that condition because they were "unclean."

What makes it interesting is the validation that comes from the Dead Sea Scrolls, which are a collection of ancient Jewish manuscripts that date from the 3rd century BCE to the 1st century CE. Those scrolls attest to a l***r colony near Bethany, adding a lot of validation to the even taking place in the home of Simon the L***r.

The Bible is not a fairy tale. There is a lot of confirmation that validates what it says. Don't let someone tell you what to think about it. Look into it yourself and make your own choices. You'll be surprised.

So, when I have to put stories together for the NAFB News Service, I have to transcribe the audio cuts into written form. I use otter.ai to do that, and sometimes the audio doesn't translate into text correctly.
I'm transcribing cuts from a Farm Bureau Economist and this is how Otter wrote it out:

"The biggest takeaways from the June acreage report was it was quite gloomy or bearish for p**n. There's a lot more p**n out there than we realized going into the report. "

USDA is branching out, I guess?

This one blew me away today. Working through Matthew Chapter 12. Remember the story of Jesus and His disciples walking through a field of wheat and picking some of the grain because they were hungry? Then, the Pharisees got indignant because that was "unlawful to do on the Sabbath."
The truly amazing thing was they were either ignorant or lying. There was no law that prohibited the plucking of grain in order to eat on the Sabbath (day of rest). Look to Deuteronomy 23:25 for 100 percent proof. The law permitted a person to glean handfuls of grain from a neighbor's field to satisfy immediate hunger.
It was only prohibited to labor for the sake of profit, meaning a farmer couldn't harvest for profit on the day of rest, but an individual could grab enough grain to satisfy an empty stomach.

That got me thinking. We've got a lot of "religious leaders" who are doing the same thing today. Either they're ignorant or flat out lying. If you're church is teaching things that go against the Bible like that, it's time to find a new church.

Matthew 6:28-30 "This is why I (Jesus) tell you don't worry about your life, what you eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn't life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds in the sky. They don't sow or gather crops into barns, yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Aren't you worth more than they?
Can anyone add a single inch to his height by worrying? And why do you worry about clothing? Look at the wildflowers and how they grow; they don't labor or spin thread. Yet even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these.
If that's how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won't He do so much more for you - you of little faith?

(Still working on the last sentence myself. But it's getting easier to trust more fully as the years go by!)

Continuing to study the Beatitudes this morning. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."

On the surface, it looks like people in deep sorrow will be comforted, which is understandable. But it actually goes a little deeper than that.

One commentary says it's actually mourning over our sin and the stupid things we do. John MacArthur puts it this way: "Mourning over sin means having a Godly sorrow that produces repentance, which leads to salvation without any regrets. The "comfort" it talks about? It's the comfort of forgiveness and salvation despite the dumb things that we do on a daily basis."

Ever look back into the past and think to yourself "what was I thinking?" Are there things you're too embarrassed about (or disgusted by) to tell ANYONE on the planet (God already knows). Any regrets? I've got a few myself.

That's godly sorrow over the things we've done. Does it make you want to be better than that? The inner drive to turn from that behavior is repentance. And that's a great sign that you are on the right track.

By the way, mom, if it helps, you only know about half of it. :)

06/17/2024

Been working through the sermon on the Mount, specifically the Beatitudes, and trying to understand what they mean. I give you Matthew 5:2 as an example: "Blessed are the poor in spirit because the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs."

Right away, I hear the word "poor" and think about material poverty. Nope.

One of my Bible commentaries describes it this way: "Poor in spirit is the opposite of self-sufficiency. It includes the realization that we are spiritually bankrupt without God. It describes those who are acutely aware they are lost and hopeless without God."

But the other part of that verse says the Kingdom of Heaven is a precious gift to those who realize they are lost without the Lord.

What this says to me is simple: You ain't getting into Heaven by yourself. There is no "self-sufficiency" at the pearly gates. It's a gift that we cannot earn on our own, so you and I need to quit trying.

If you are one who knows deep in your heart that you can't get to Heaven without Jesus, that should tell you your faith is getting stronger.

Happy Father's Day!

Wondering if anyone would be willing to say a prayer for my dad? KC is going through stem cell replacement this week. The next few days are gonna be rough and I'm asking for prayers that he would get through and come out the other side. God's got this but I'd sure be grateful for a few heartfelt prayers from you. Thanks!

So I'm finishing up the Book of Revelation. I've recently been doing a study on the things of the Gospel the church is getting wrong. We might wanna be careful about how we share the Bible with other people.

Revelation 22:19 says, "I testify to everyone who hears the prophetic words of this Book that if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book. And if anyone takes away from the words of this prophetic Book, God will take away his share of the Tree of Life and the holy city, written in this Book."

Dear American churches: God values His Word. Be faithful in your teachings. The plagues are beyond anything seen at any time in the history of the world.

Dear American churchgoers, if your preacher is teaching something that's not in the Bible, after reading the end of Revelation, I'd have something serious to think about.

Believers, get to know the Word of God. It takes time. But I'm here to tell you, it makes an incredible difference. The Word is sharper than ANY two-edged sword... And the only offensive weapon mentioned in the armor of God.

Just had to share today...
