What is Overbuying, and why is it a sustainability topic? Overbuying usually refers to purchasing more items than you actually need or can use. This action often leads to waste, especially when items expire, spoil, or are forgotten. Overbuying is very common in the areas of food, clothing, and household goods. Overbuying causes environmental harm through resource depletion, excess production, and increased waste. Which, as we all know, is not good for us or the planet.

This month, my goal is for each of us to develop habits that minimize waste and encourage mindful consumption, benefiting both the planet and our wallets. Here are some quick tips to help with this issue if you are experiencing it:

• Action: Delete or silence any apps on your devices that may be driving some of the overbuying habits.
• Action: Unsubscribe from websites, newsletters, and mail that encourage unnecessary repeat buying.
• Action: Plan meals before grocery shopping.
• Action: When shopping for new items, consider whether you have “needs” or “wants.” The “wants” generally leads to overbuying.
• Action: If you are bulk buying items, consider taking inventory of what you already have before buying more.
• Action: Before buying a new outfit, consider whether buying a used one first accomplishes the goal. Can you borrow the outfit? Have you really looked in the deep archives of your closet for a suitable alternative?
• Action: Resist seasonal and holiday clearance, which is usually impulse buying.

By considering each of these tips for overbuying, you can develop habits that minimize waste and encourage mindful consumption, benefiting both the planet and your wallet

"Sustainability... let’s talk about it! 🗣

What exactly is sustainability?
The formal definition of Sustainability refers to the practice of meeting our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability balances environmental health, economic capability, and social equity as a measure of success.

This concept transforms your mindset and targets more areas than just physical property actions that we take. The following are the basic principles:

🕺Human / Person
💰Economic
♻️Environmental
👯♀️Social

When we spread our sustainability efforts to areas beyond self the ripple can be felt and carried on by a much larger circle. These benefits have an impact on your overall well-being and the environment. Learn more on our website:

Happy World Wetlands Day!!

World Wetlands Day is an environmental holiday to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and the planet. This year's theme is ‘Wetlands and Human Wellbeing’, recognizing wetlands as critical to people and nature. The wetland ecosystems contribute to sustainable development and human well-being but are shrinking. The wetlands provide water purification, flood protection, and shoreline stabilization.

Take this day to take a small action to help, such as reducing your water usage, educating yourself on wetlands, and reducing pollution by picking up trash that has been left by others.

Did you know that by shutting off the water while shaving or brushing your teeth you may save up to 4 gallons of water a day? Using less water keeps more in the ecosystems and helps to keep water habitats for animals and humans helping to avoid drought conditions. Reducing your use of water helps keep the fresh water supply available for more people and reduces the use of all of the resources that pump and prepare the water for use.

"Truth: your mindset greatly impacts the organization of your home. 🧠

When you have an organized mind, that translates into an organized home – and vice versa.

When your home is organized and tidy, you'll usually feel more refreshed and clear-minded. When your home is cluttered and disorganized, you can quickly feel unmotivated and stressed.🕊️
Being at peace in your home and head makes you more sustainable.🧘‍♀️

How does the state of your home impact your mindset? "

Today we will discuss paper and the recycling bin.

Curbside recycling is a convenient way to recycle paper products like cardboard boxes, pizza boxes, mail, and paper bags. Here are some things to know about curbside paper recycling

Most community and office recycling programs accept paper and paper products. However, some types of paper are not recyclable, including coated and treated paper, paper with food waste, juice, and cereal boxes, paper cups, used paper towels, and paper/magazines laminated with plastic.

You can remove staples and paper clips before recycling, but it's not necessary because the recycling machinery can remove them.

Paper, newspapers, and magazines, flattened cardboard & paperboard are good to recycle.
Cardboard pizza delivery boxes without leftovers or liners should be recycled, but leftover crusts, cheese, and other food should not. No wax or plastic coating cups should be put in recycling.

Small papers can be included if they are in an envelope that is recyclable.

Please check with your local recycling provider first, to be certain since it depends on your local area.

Today we will discuss more about the recycle bin, specifically Aluminum.
Aluminum cans, foil, and baking trays can all be recycled. Here are some of the secrets to making the most out of your recycling.
A recycled aluminum beverage can is often recycled directly back into itself. Recycled aluminum only takes around 5% of the energy needed to make new aluminum — reducing carbon emissions and saving money for businesses and end consumers. You do not have to crush aluminum cans to recycle them.
Did you know if you collect all your small aluminum pieces, such as chocolate wrappers, clean yogurt covers, and other small aluminum pieces, and make them into a solid ball, you can toss the ball (2-3 inches in size) into your recycle bin, and it will all be recycled? Aluminum tabs and caps should be collected and also rolled in a ball with foil or trapped in an all aluminum can in the recycle bin.
Remember that all cans should be rinsed as it reduces contamination in the process.

Please check with your local recycling provider first, though, to be certain since it depends on your local area.

Happy New Year! Here are some creative ways to recycle paper, glass, and plastic.

🫙Glass – Jars can be used for food storage, outdoor and indoor lanterns, wind chimes, vases, mosaic art projects, and storage holders for parts in the garage or basement.
🍶 Plastic – Planters for both indoor and outdoor, Bird feeders, and cut-gallon bottles could be made into funnels or scoops, and plastic bags could be crocheted into rugs, mats, or reusable creative bags.
📄Paper – Upcycle greeting cards for your next gift opportunity, Paper art projects (can be donated to many schools/daycare centers if you do not craft at home), this year wrapping paper or packing paper can be saved to be reused, paper can be used to press and dry flowers, etc., make a collage out of magazine cutouts, newspaper, and scraps that could be gifted.

Think of the endless opportunities to avoid trash with your recycling opportunities.

Today, we will discuss the recycle bin, but more specifically, Plastics. Did you know that your plastic containers should be food-free before they are tossed in your recycle bin? But, here is a little secret: You can run them through the dishwasher with your other dirty dishes or run a batch once a month of all your recyclable containers. The dishwasher can even clean a peanut butter container.
Cleaning the containers before recycling prevents contamination in the recycling process. Another little tip you can use is to take all the small pieces that you collect and put them inside a clean recycling plastic jar and close the lid, and they will all be recycled. It is not usually advised to throw small plastics in your recycling bin but it works if they are in a closed plastic jar.
Plastic wraps, bags, and plastic film should not be put in the recycle bin unless your municipality specifically states otherwise. However, many grocery stores usually have a bin for this purpose (again, they must be clean).

FYI - black plastic food containers go in the trash as recycling machinery cannot identify and sort them. The clear cover, however, can be cleaned and processed.
Other meat trays made of plastic must again be rinsed, and any foam or packaging must be put in the trash. Please check with your local recycling provider first, though, to be certain as it depends on your local area.

Polystyrene foam, plastic "to-go" containers, and cups are made of non-recyclable materials and are not acceptable in many curbside recycling programs. Packing peanuts also are not recyclable. However, some shipping stores will take peanuts back for reuse.

"It's common to feel like your home just doesn't have enough storage space.

When you really think about it though, your home probably has plenty of space – closets, attics, and basements just to name a few.

The real problem is likely how you are utilizing those spaces. With a little bit of creativity and effort, you can easily maximize the space to get the most use out of them. Try these ideas as a start:

1️⃣ Start by getting rid of items. These items can most likely be donated but be honest on the evaluation of toss or donate. Chances are, you've continued to add things to those rooms and spaces, but haven't removed things nearly as often.

2️⃣ Use storage solutions. Depending on the items being stored, shelving units, drawers, bins, and hooks are great ways to optimize your storage space while reducing some visual clutter as well.

3️⃣ Don't allow wasted space. If you have higher ceilings or awkward corners, don't skip over those spaces. These are prime real estate; it just takes some creative solutions.

4️⃣ Label EVERYTHING. Labeling storage containers not only makes the space more visually appealing but also makes it super simple to find things. This prevents you from digging through bins and making messes while searching for items. For items that are indecisive, date the bin and take action to donate if it has not been accessed in a year.

Feeling overwhelmed? I'd be honored to help you get your home to a sustainable state of organization. Contact me today to get started!

Happy New Year! Are you planning a major renovation or thinking solar in the future? If so, now is the time to start thinking and planning about more sustainable appliance swaps.

If you are planning a renovation in the kitchen one consideration would be to change from a gas range to an electric (induction) option. Electric stoves heat 30% faster, and this will enable solar support if that is in future or current plans.

Other appliances that might enable an improved solar conversion are a gas clothes dryer, gas furnace, and water heater. There are lots of local programs that offer rebates for some of these switches that you might be considering.

Remember that perfection is not the objective, but by pre-planning and being intentional with future buying choices, you can make an environmental improvement in your own space.
