11.12.61 is the third film by TFP’s Ryan Sturgis and producer Jameel Haque. Haque, focusing on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The film explores his journey and activism, continuing their important work in social justice.

Why I Love Working with Women

Thanks to The Free Press of Mankato MN for publishing my editorial yesterday. Below is the complete, unedited draft.

I've been fortunate to spend much of my life surrounded by extraordinary women. I was raised by an extraordinary mother alongside an extraordinary sister; I married an extraordinary doctor; and now we have an extraordinary daughter.
I’ve also had the privilege to collaborate with hundreds of remarkable women throughout my life, both professionally and creatively. One attribute has frequently stood out to me, and I want to preface my observation by saying that I believe it is due to a social construct—born from centuries of oppression that women have endured across time and space. The women I’ve worked with not only excel in their roles, but often seem compelled to go ten extra miles at every turn. In doing so, they become so exceptional at what they do, they naturally lead decisively, yet always remain open to listening, often with great patience. They know when to pivot, understand how their actions impact others, and most importantly, they excel at both collaboration and commitment. It is through that collaboration and commitment that great things are accomplished, which is why I love working with women.
As I reflect on 15 years in the creative field, I’m grateful for every opportunity I’ve had to collaborate with women. So many come to mind—women who’ve taught me, built with me, and embraced the creative process without the need to prove they already know everything. While I recognize that my perspective doesn't cover every nuance of gender dynamics, this insight comes from my own enriching experiences.
As I continue to grow, I can say with both clarity and conviction that I want more of this confident, committed, kind, and brave collaboration in my life. Moreover, I believe our communities would greatly benefit from embracing more of it as well. With many women running for office in the upcoming election, both nationally and here in Southern Minnesota, I feel a deep sense of hope. I imagine a future where our country is led with this collaborative spirit, and I am inspired by the possibilities it could bring.
So, I commit to women—not merely through statements or grand gestures, but through action. In collaboration, hard work, creative expression, development, ex*****on, and success. I will learn from them, build with them, follow them, and be led by them. I commit to being "us" with them. By committing to women, I commit to all of us, to our collective growth and betterment. I want to see where we can take us, and I encourage all men, especially those in leadership positions to join me.
