THANKFUL

As we flip the calendar into a new month, we feel this is the month to slow down, reflect, and embrace gratitude for life’s many blessings.

-Right now is the time to deeply cherish our closest connections, most especially the Divine ones. This is the time to find honor in small joys, and recognize our resilience to overcome any obstacle. Expressing gratitude and thanks can deepen bonds, uplift spirits, and remind us of life’s abundance - grounding us as we move into the season of giving.

In honor of being grateful & thankful, here is the November ‘Thankful’ Issue - Issue #34

We know, we know. We say it every month that this is the best issue, but seriously, this is THE best issue yet!

-On the cover is yet another classic from our staff photographer, Tim Sigle & SIGLE PHOTOGRAPHY, this time, it’s the Flint Hills Discovery Center!

This dynamic space celebrates the region’s natural beauty, culture, and history, fostering community engagement and education. The FHDC was also McCownGordon Construction’s very first project in Manhattan.

•Daily Gratitude Journal Prompts. The Art of gratitude can be healing well beyond the month of November. This is just the month to get into the true mindset of gratefulness year-round. To aid in your endeavors, here is a list of 30 daily gratitude journal prompts to give you a template on how to do it. Trust us, it works! Page 12.

Coming up this Saturday, November 2nd, is the 7th Annual Young Trustees MHK Chili Cook-Off!

In our October Food issue, we explained the origin of the event, the non-profits they support, and also who the Young Trustees of MHK are!

“On a cool, crisp November morning, the brisk morning air warms rather quickly with excitement and anticipation. Standing in the shadows of the new, 80,000 square foot Edge District building at 1860 Kimball Avenue, the asphalt parking lot is filled with the sounds of sizzling pots and bubbling chili. A deep, hearty fragrance spreads throughout the venue, making mouths water and stomachs growl. Each year, the Young Trustees of MHK Chili Cook-Off cooking contest stands out as one of the most vibrant and beloved events in the Little Apple, and the upcoming 2024 edition will be no exception.”

Beautiful October.

October is a magical month. It’s filled with crisp air, vibrant autumn colors, and cozy sweata weatha. It’s the season of pumpkin spice, festive gatherings, Championship Royals baseball, and K-State extending its football winning streak over the Jayhawks. With Halloween around the corner, October brings forth a sense of warmth, nostalgia, and excitement for the holidays ahead.

As the season changes, October is also the perfect foodie month with hearty soups, seasonal produce, pumpkin everything, and comfort foods. Fall flavors shine, making every meal warm and satisfying.

-With that, we’re proud to present, the Food Issue of Manhattan City Lifestyle

•On the cover is another classic from SIGLE PHOTOGRAPHY. Featuring the beautiful dish, #27 com dac biet, from one of Manhattan’s eateries, Phở Việt

-Inside-

•Take a trip to Pho Viet for a taste of Vietnam in the heart of Downtown Manhattan. Serving as the Little Apple’s only true Vietnamese restaurant, Pho Viet has something for everyone on their menu. From authentic Pho, a warm noodle soup, to rice with grilled pork chops, or grilled meat vermicelli, any food mood can be satisfied at Phở Việt. Read more about it from our Editor, Heather Hoffman, on page 14.

•Sale Barn Cafe. Inside the Manhattan Commission Company - also known as the Manhattan Sale Barn - sits one of Manhattan’s best kept secrets: the sale barn cafe! Serving home-cooked meals with an extra dose of local charm, this place has been coinciding with the cattle auction for over a hundred years. The breakfast and the burgers are tremendous, and it’s worth the visit. Read more about the sale barn cafe from Cooper Deters on page 20.

•Two days into November will be the 7th Annual Young Trustees of MHK Chili Cook-Off. This fun, family-friendly event is one of the most anticipated on the Little Apple’s calendar, and this year will be its biggest and best yet. Besides the chili sampling, the best part is the money the event raises to help support numerous area non-profits. This must attend event also makes a fun read, find the article on page 26!

•Spook-cuterie. If you’re headed to a Halloween party, here’s our spooky spin on the classic charcuterie. From Oreo spiders, to Nutter Butter Ghosts, find some inspiration on page 30.

To finish up the September style issue, and to get ready for the October ‘Food’ issue, here’s a simple and wonderful recipe from our staff writer, Kenny Whitis!

Pineapple Salsa!

•This homemade pineapple salsa is a burst of freshness and flavor. The sweetness of ripe pineapple perfectly balances with tangy lime, zesty cilantro, and a touch of jalapeño heat. It's vibrant, refreshing, and the ideal topping for tacos, grilled meats, or a simple snack with chips!

Happy Caturday Weekend!

-For our September “Style” Issue, it was fun featuring the K-State Football equipment managers!

•Explore the K-State football equipment room at Bill Snyder Family Stadium and the Vanier Football Complex. As soon as the elevator doors open, you'll step into a world of organized chaos, where the rich history of K-State football is preserved. Under the leadership of Al Cerbe, the 2024 Equipment Manager of the Year, this award-winning team ensures the Wildcats are always outfitted in their signature style.

“Looking to the left is a large laundry area, housing a half dozen commercial sized washing machines, humming with constant operation. To the right, stands rows of shelves and storage lockers, holding every imaginable piece of football gear.

The walls throughout are adorned with K-State relics and classic Big Eight memorabilia. There are banners, a stack of helmets from every NFL and current Big 12 team, and a fully dressed mannequin. As much as any other room in the entire stadium, the equipment room truly highlights the pride and rich history of Wildcat football.”

The City anticipates heavy rush hour traffic on Friday, September 13, in and around the entire city, due to the Kansas State University football game that starts at 7 p.m. Friday. Gameday traffic is expected to start congesting the roadways around noon and the congestion will remain until well after the game is over late into the night.

With parking lots near the stadium opening at 2 p.m., arterial roadways into and out of Manhattan are expected to be at full capacity. The City is asking drivers not associated with the game to seek alternate routes that avoid the area of Kimball, College, and North Manhattan avenues. The City also encourages drivers to complete their trips earlier in the day, if possible.

The City and K-State Athletics welcome all our visitors to Manhattan and we hope you enjoy your stay. Traffic cameras are available for travelers to view at https://cityofmhk.com/trafficcams.
