How to Decorate Using Feelings – by Joanna Renner
Forget color wheels and formulas. Joanna advises that decorating with feelings is about letting your space match the energy you want to live in.
This is how Joanna Renner approaches design: intuitive,
sensory, and heart-driven.
Each color corresponds to an emotion and an element when
you align both, your home begins to heal, uplift, and support your energy.
Step 1: Feel the Intention of the Room.
So before choosing colors or décor, pause and ask, "How do I want to feel in this space?"
Peaceful? Motivated? Romantic?
Each emotion carries an elemental vibration. For example, serenity aligns with Water, warmth, inspiration and energetic with Fire, and stability, self care with Earth. Your emotional intention
becomes the foundation for your design.
Step 2: Match Feelings to Elemental Colors
Now, translate your chosen feeling into color using the Five Elements:
Wood – Growth, vitality, optimism. Greens and blues inspire creativity and expansion.
Fire – Passion, excitement, joy. Reds and oranges ignite inspiration and movement.
Earth – Grounding, nourishment, calm. Browns, yellows, and clay tones create security and
warmth.
Metal – Clarity, precision, elegance. Whites, metallics, and grays bring order and purity.
Water – Flow, wisdom, intuition. Deep blues and blacks promote introspection and ease.
Step 3: Layer with Texture and Light
Each element expresses itself not only through color, but texture and light. Soft fabrics and
diffused lighting evoke Earth’s nurturing calm. Glossy surfaces and mirrored finishes enhance Metal’s clarity.
Dancing candlelight awakens Fire’s vitality. Let your senses lead.
Step 4: Use the "Squinting Test"
Step back and look away. When you glance back, notice which color catches your eye first.
That is your emotional anchor the color your energy is most drawn to right now.
Use it as your centerpiece.
Step 5: Trust the Vibe Over the Rules
If it feels right, it is right.
Balance can mean harmony through contrast.
Trust your instincts
they are the purest form of alignment.
Your home is your mirror; when it feels good, your
energy rises.
Step 6: Add a Signature Element
Finish your space with a piece that holds meaning a candle for Fire, a plant for Wood, a
crystal for Earth, a metallic accent for Metal, or a small fountain for Water.
Objects create subconscious thoughts and we want your space to remind you of things that support what you want to manifest and feel now and in future outcomes.
This is your
energetic signature the final note that harmonizes your room’s frequency.
Remember: Decorating isn’t about perfection. It’s about resonance.
When a space feels like
peace, joy, or love, you’ve already done it right.
