Composer and percussionist Warren Benson (January 26, 1924 - October 6, 2005) is perhaps best known for his finely wrought song cycles and innovative and expressive music for wind ensemble, which has been acclaimed as “among the most important of this century” (United States Marine Band, Bicentennial Collection).

From his early days as a percussionist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Benson was captivated by the variety of sounds percussion instruments could produce, and explores this range in his compositions for wind and chamber ensembles. His catalog includes over 150 compositions touching on almost all significant genres of music. His works have been performed in more than 50 countries throughout the world, and some 30 works have been recorded.

We at Presser mark the 100th anniversary of Benson’s birth year and celebrate his impact on the musical world. Explore his catalog now at https://www.presser.com/warren-benson

Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s eponymous THANKSGIVING SONG for SATB Voices and Piano is a short, yet strong statement piece about the holiday, marked by concentrated, often unison vocal writing and accented, open-voiced chords in the piano part. The text, written by the composer herself, urges us to consider what we are thankful for as we take part in the annual festivities. We are pleased to announce the release of two new works by for unaccompanied cello. The first of these, SETS OF VARIATIONS, is an 11-minute solo in which the successive themes of each variation set are derived from the preceding music, creating a kind of multilevel maze. The second, SUITE NO. 3, is a three-movement suite containing an opening movement characterized by rubato movement, a eulogy titled Passacaglietta (Lament for my friend George Crumb), and a Scherzetto marked as “light and fanciful.” Find the former at https://www.presser.com/114-42222, and the latter at https://www.presser.com/114-42348.

Amanda Harberg's PRAYER is a rarity in the modern concert repertoire, containing beautiful romanticism built from a haunting soloistic instrumental aria over a graceful piano accompaniment. Within the reach of younger players, the work was inspired as a prayer for the healing of a close family member. PRAYER’s acclaim among musicians has led to versions for a variety of other instruments, including Flute, Saxophone, English Horn, Bassoon, Tuba, Violin, Viola, Cello, as well as Orchestra; the newest of these is for Bb Clarinet and Piano. On November 1 & 2, the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra plays Adolphus Hailstork's THREE SPIRITUALS, a setting of "We Shall Overcome,” “Kum Ba Yah,” and “Great Day” for orchestra. American composer Adolphus Hailstork began his musical education on the violin, then quickly expanded into piano and organ lessons. At age 15, he considered himself a composer and went to Howard University to study music.
After graduation in 1963, Hailstork traveled to Paris for the summer to study with Nadia Boulanger, then returned to the states for his master’s program. In 1968, as Hailstork finished a two-year term in the United States Army, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. Hailstork notes that this made him “more actively racially conscious” and the news about the educated activist motivated Hailstork to get his own doctorate, which he completed in 1971.

Throughout his career, Hailstork has remained “racially conscious,” with a goal of supporting and amplifying the African American community:
"I want to help establish a black canon, so that after I have gone away, I [will] have left a few symphonies [and] piano sonatas that black and white conductors will want to do. And they will say, “Hey, this is great music.” But there will be a hint of African American experience in it. You see, we were left out of the American school of composition in the twenties, or forties of Copland, and all that…we were left out of it. Now, it’s our time to make our impact and to add to the American repertoire, and that should include us."

Hailstork’s compositional style reflects this goal, pulling on Black musical genres like the blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel, and spirituals. At the same time, he is also influenced by the mid-twentieth century American school of composition, led by composers such as Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, and Leonard Bernstein. Hailstork identifies as a “folk” composer along the lines of Antonín Dvořák or Jean Sibelius, using cultural idioms of and for his community.

If you want to experience Hailstork's incredible symphony, Three Spirituals, purchase tickets now for this weekend's performance of Masterworks II - Connections at Maryland Hall. Tickets: https://annapolissymphony.org/events/masterworksiiconnections/

What better way to celebrate Halloween than. . . playing horror film scores! Composed as a live score to the 1910 silent film by J. Searle Dawley, EDISON’S FRANKENSTEIN by Yukiko Nishimura is a lush, gripping work for string quartet. Also performable as a standalone concert piece, Nishimura’s personally etched, quasi-impressionistic phrases make this work accessible and surprising at every turn. Experience the music synced with Edison Studios’ film on the composer’s YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/nLDi5PbfUYc?si=9V2f7BS1WP96i8m3
