"They say you should write what you know. As a science teacher I am not a creative writer, I am a technical writer. Get in, explain what you observed, interpret the results, and get out. Deciding to jump into the pool of romance novels was quite the leap for me, but I had a story running through my brain.
There I was on Halloween reading a post in one of my favorite authorās Facebook groups asking about NaNoWriMo. When I had no clue what that was I took to the interwebs to find out and thought to myself, āI think I can do that.ā Lo and behold Nov 30th rolled around, I had over fifty thousand words, and could see the ending to my story just on the horizon. My grammar was atrocious, I still double spaced after every sentence, and I couldnāt use a comma to save my life. Thank God for alpha readers and my Discord writing buddies who encouraged me the whole way.
Thank you so much to Robin Tenhaeff, Beth Hudson, Crystal Buras, Abby Eileen, and Kyra Harrison. You worked me through sprints, gave off your grammar expertise, and helped me work out all the s**t when I didnāt think I could write anything but the technical. You helped me add heart to my story. Special thanks to my hubby Mr. Alfonso who helped me research, bounce ideas, and gave me wise words that would make any book boyfriend swoon worthy. Finally, thank you to Sami Strait, you took a chance on a first time writer, and I am forever grateful that you did.
Mari is a character that is usually written as a plucky sidekick, the girl you take as a date because everyone else was busy. It was important to me to tell the story of a plus sized Latina with self worth issues, because that is so many of us.
We grew up in a home that guilted us when we didnāt clean our plates while simultaneously criticizing our lonjas. We are told that the men of our culture are going to cheat, but if he is a good provider you should turn the other cheek. So many times Iāve seen strong women settle for a relationship, because they donāt believe they deserve better. Ladies it is not a badge of honor to hold together a toxic relationship, we have the right to happiness. Donāt accept anything less than full support and understanding, and know that there is strength and honor in moving on.
In the high school I teach at we are a close knit group of teachers, there is a student who was raised by his grandparents with a young hot dad, and I did observe some flirting. Did my mind run away to the fantastic world of HEAs, yes it did. I canāt really believe that I was able to write a whole story, and fall so in love with a cast of characters that I plan to give each of the teachers their own HEAs.
I promise Jess, Ruby, Elijah, Marcos and even Caleb will get a story. Look for the second book in the series to be out late this year, and tell me who you hope will be the hero/heroine next." -Alicia Alfonso
