MMSD Announces Return to In-Person Learning after a Week Long Delay
All grades levels to return to school buildings Monday, January 10

MADISON - Today, Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) announced it will be returning to in-person learning, at all grade levels, Monday, January 10, after a week-long delay in returning from winter-break.

Last night, the MMSD Board of Education held a special meeting with district leadership to discuss plans moving forward, with many families, staff, and medical advisors sharing their unique perspectives and recommendations during the meeting. The decision comes after a week of diligent and collaborative work, including the ongoing review of local health metrics and trends, and receiving guidance from district medical advisors relative to ensuring safety and sustainability in the district's return.

“We recognize this week has affected our scholars, families, and staff in many ways,” said Superintendent, Dr. Carlton D. Jenkins. “ We appreciate our school community's patience and understanding. Although we prefer our scholars to be connecting in-person with teachers and staff while learning in our classrooms, this necessary pause strengthened our ability to sustain remaining open safely.”

The pause in returning to in-person was in response to a significant increase in local cases of COVID-19, fueled by the new Omicron variant. The spike in positive cases had a significant impact on MMSD staffing levels at many schools and severely limited the availability of testing resources and personnel protective equipment. During the pause the district’s work included:
• Meeting and collaborating with our local medical advisory team;
• Planning, staffing, and hosting several vaccine and booster clinics as well as COVID-19 testing sites;
• Acquiring a sustainable supply of PPE, rapid antigen tests, and PCR tests;
• Modifying its contact tracing strategy due to significant anticipated increases in cases, while utilizing available staff;
• Planning around staff shortages
• Refining social-emotional learning lessons for families who request extra support.

As an additional layer of safety, the district strongly encouraged students to be tested for COVID-19 prior to their return on Monday. The district also encouraged students displaying symptoms or having been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, to visit one of several district sponsored testing sites. Other recommendations to students and families included:
• Reviewing district safety mitigation strategies with students prior to their return;
• Encouraging support to school staff members who are supporting safety protocol adherence;
• Encouraging proper masking and hand washing;
• Ensuring students stays home, and get tested, when sick or showing symptoms;
• Completing COVID-19 screeners and following screener guidance;
• Adhering to physical distancing of three feet for students (six feet when eating) when possible;
• Strongly encouraging students to receive COVID-19 vaccinations or boosters.

Considering our nation is still very much in the midst of the pandemic, the district highlighted how staffing levels as a result of the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 and possible future variants remains as a considerable concern. Therefore, it is plausible for the community to expect, at some point in the future, a school or a classroom to briefly close, based on staffing levels in a particular building.

MMSD Delays Return from Winter Break Due to COVID Concerns Instruction to start in a virtual model January 6, before transitioning back to in-person
MADISON — Due to the increased incidence of COVID-19 in Dane County, and discussions with local health experts, the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) is delaying its return from winter break, at all grade levels, with instruction beginning Thursday, January 6. As part of this pause, Thursday’s return to instruction will be virtual, as planning continues for the district’s intended transition from winter break back to in-person learning. All MMSD staff will return to their work spaces, schedule, and routines on Monday, January 3.
Recently, the new Omicron variant of COVID-19 has fueled a steep upward trajectory in positive Dane County cases. Currently, total case counts are doubling at the alarming rate of every two days. Local and national health experts are forecasting COVID-19 cases to continue climbing, peaking in mid-to-late January. This increase in cases will further amplify the district’s already critical level of staff shortages.
“There are no "easy" decisions relative to navigating the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Superintendent Dr. Carlton D. Jenkins. “We recognize this decision will have a significant impact on our families, especially single parents and essential workers. However, we will continue to leverage our resources to support our families and ensure their safety and wellbeing”
Throughout the pandemic, the district’s layered safety strategy has been highly effective in mitigating spread and keeping schools safe. The pause will allow the district to reset, and better monitor current conditions as well as secure additional resources for safety mitigation. The change also allows time for the district to address critical staff shortages due to COVID-19, and ensure its return to in-person learning is sustainable.
“Understanding the social, emotional and mental health benefits of remaining in-person has made this decision incredibly difficult,” Dr. Jenkins added. “It has always been our preference to have students learning in-person, in the classroom. Our ultimate responsibility is to ensure our return to school buildings for in-person instruction after winter break will be done in a safe and sustainable manner.”

The district will be providing the community with an update on its return next Thursday, January 6.

WISCONSIN EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PRESS RELEASE: Be weather prepared during rare December wind and storm event
Be weather prepared during rare December wind and storm event
MADISON, Wis. – All of Wisconsin is under a high wind warning, with gusts expected late Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning.
The National Weather Service is expecting those gusts to exceed 65 mph in some areas. There is also a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms, with isolated tornadoes possible.
ReadyWisconsin is urging people to be prepared during this weather event. Make preparations now for power outages that could be prolonged in some areas.
To stay safe from severe weather, ReadyWisconsin encourages people to do the following:
• Know where designated shelters are located at home, work, and school, and be ready to go there when a tornado warning is issued.
• Have multiple ways to receive alerts about approaching severe weather. Outdoor warning sirens, a NOAA Weather Radio, local media, and smartphone apps are all important tools. Don’t rely on any single source for important life-saving alerts.
• If you have a mobile device, make sure it is enabled to receive Wireless Emergency Alerts. On many devices, that option is available in the settings menu.
• Create an emergency kit for your home, with supplies such as food, water, a flashlight, and first aid kit. Find tips for building a kit at https://readywisconsin.wi.gov
During high wind events, avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in lower levels of your home and avoid windows. ReadyWisconsin suggests securing lightweight objects, such as holiday decoration, and bring unsecured objects inside.
Travel may also be difficult for those driving high-profile vehicles, such as semi-trucks and large SUVs. Crosswinds can easily affect these vehicles with a larger surface area.
Wisconsin Emergency Management is monitoring the weather conditions and stands ready to assist if local officials request assistance.
For more tips on severe weather, visit https://readywisconsin.wi.gov.
