One reason I love where I live: I went on a 10-mile bike ride this morning. The pavement was all decent, but more important was that the few vehicles that passed me were invariably polite and gave me lots of room, even the Lycon concrete mixer and the John's Disposal truck.

I may have posted this link to my WordPress page earlier, but it is worth posting again: https://earlewheels.wordpress.com/maynard/ Picture is Maynard (left) and Mario Gios.

I asked Maynard to write some original content for the Earle Wheels Website, and he readily agreed. He wrote a nice piece, much in the vein of columns he has been writing for decades. Any of his re…

About my riding: I rode the Litespeed on the Cold Spring-Fremont loop, 13 miles, dodging some fresh pavement patches on Cold Spring. I love that bike!

The new Chris Cross is the bike I have been wanting for 30 years, but had not fully designed. When I talk about "bikes for the rest of us," the Chris Cross is what I mean.

News that really affects me: May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, and also Older Americans Month. In celebration and in training for the AIDS Ride Wisconsin, I will be testing myself in Chattanooga on Saturday, May 6, with a 65-mile ride that includes 4,000 feet of climbing. I am also soliciting support for my AIDS Ride. Here is a link to the site. http://arcw.convio.net/site/TR?fr_id=1210&pg=entry .

Weather is getting nicer, getting in a few more miles on the fixed gear. My loop is about 6.4 miles, with a few small grades. I'm all the way up to a whopping 13 mph for that loop today. A little faster, climbs went a little easier. Progress.

I wrote this piece in 1987 for Fat Tire Flyer, the first mountain bike magazine, run by Charlie Kelly. I can’t say the piece made me rich, but it was a lot of fun to write. I hope you like it…
