WORT FM

WORT FM Listener-sponsored, volunteer-powered community radio broadcasting to Madison and beyond.
(361)

We are a nonprofit and noncommercial community radio station based in Madison,
and broadcasting to south-central Wisconsin. Founded in 1975, the station is driven by
hundreds of on-air and off-air volunteers, a small staff collective, a Board of Directors, and
many listeners and listener-sponsors. At the core of the WORT mission is the facilitation of community expression. We strive to challenge t

he cultural and intellectual assumptions of our listeners through unique and diverse local programming, and include audiences and programmers underrepresented in other media. Almost all our 24/7 programming is produced by volunteer members of the community. Our
deejays share music across all genres, our reporters cover local news impacting our community,
our talk shows provide a forum for the discussion of public issues, and our public access
programming allows individuals in the community a chance to host a radio show of their own. For more information about WORT, and to listen to our programming, visit our website at

In the interview, she reflects on several compositions of hers that have recently been recorded, including “Delta Daze,” a work for solo trombone and electronics, “Italian Portraits” for solo piano, and “The Featherheart” for clarinet and piano. Dr. Ware’s music tends to be lush and tonal, with strong programmatic elements, often related to landscape.

On Monday, a broad coalition of activists, including Indigenous Water Protectors and international climate justice organizers, rallied at the Wisconsin DNR headquarters to protest its recent approval of a permit to reroute 41 miles of the Line 5 oil pipeline in northern Wisconsin.

Here’s what you should know…

The DNR’s permit approval came just days after a nearly 70,000-gallon oil spill from Enbridge’s Line 6 pipeline in Jefferson County. Both Line 5 and Line 6 are owned by Enbridge, a Canadian multinational oil corporation. In 2013, the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa declined to renew Enbridge’s easement to operate on their land and filed a lawsuit in 2019 to remove the pipeline. In late 2022, a federal judge ruled that Enbridge was trespassing on the tribe’s land and ordered the section running through their reservation to be shut down by 2026.

Despite opposition from the Bad River Band and other Water Protectors, who fear contamination of their land and water, the DNR approved the reroute. The DNR states that the permit contains “more than 200 conditions to ensure compliance with state’s wetlands and waterways standards,” and that the construction permits include “specific plans for erosion control and water quality protection.” However, activists argue that these measures are inadequate since the sections running through northern Wisconsin are at a high risk of rupturing, threatening the Great Lakes ecosystem.

Protesters marched from the State Capitol to the DNR headquarters to deliver a letter to DNR Director Greg Pils, demanding that the permit be revoked and the pipeline removed. The group occupied the DNR lobby and stated their intention to stay until someone would speak with them. Several activists tried to enter the business office and two were detained by State Capitol Police. A 72-year-old Indigenous activist was arrested and later released on bail. At 4:00, protestors were asked to leave the building or be arrested. Despite heated conversation between the Water Protectors and Capitol Police, everyone was out of the building by 4:30pm.

WORT DJ strikes gold!

Our very own John Kraniak, host of Entertainment on Saturday mornings, recently donated an original phonograph record of "Notre Dame Victory March" and "Hike, Notre Dame" to the University Archives.

Kraniak acquired this 1925 treasure from a mail auction in the 70s. As Indiana Jones would say, "It belongs in a museum!" And that's exactly where the record went.

Kat and the Hurricane is a genre- and gender-bending indie-pop/synth-rock band from Madison, Wisconsin. The band is composed of guitarist and vocalist Kat Rhapsody (they/them), keyboardist and vocalist Benjamin Rose (they/them), and drummer Alex Nelson (they/them). Kat and the Hurricane has stirred up a storm across the Midwest since it formed in 2017 thanks to their energetic live shows, strong sense of community, and genre-defying songwriting.

In this episode of Queery, the band speaks with host Vicki Kenyon and play tracks from their debut studio album Got It Out that they put out in October 2024. They answer questions about their Spotify Wrapped stats, artistic influences and the importance of LGBTQ+ representation in their music. The band expresses the importance of their privilege and responsibility of living in a time where they can name their identities of androgyny and queerness with specificity.

The Access Hour is WORT’s commitment to community access to the airwaves. For one out of every 168 broadcast hours each week, we turn the airwaves over to a member of the public to program on their own. That hour is every Monday night from 7 to 8pm.

Check out two recent Access Hour shows:

Janis Strutt hosted an Access Hour on Monday, December 2 to discuss the non-profit Morgan’s Caring Connection. Morgan's Caring Connection aims to lighten the burdens parents and guardians face, ensuring they have the support, resources, and financial assistance needed to navigate the aftermath of loss. Through education, provision of resources, and financial support, they aspire to empower individuals to face such challenges with greater resilience and preparedness.

Madison’s newest R&B pop band Smart Cookie performed live on December 9 in the WORT Vinyl Library. Between their upbeat songs, the band members asked each other questions about what got them into playing in a band, the first concerts they went to and first instruments they played, and what ideas led to the creation of their favorite songs. Their goofy, light-hearted responses give a glimpse into why these musicians have such great musical chemistry.

Kevin Price called 911 on August 12. But instead of getting help, a Fitchburg police officer shot him.

Kevin's family wasn't informed until three days later. After he died alone in the hospital.

“You know, I think it’s really unfair that Kevin can’t really defend himself in all this – and that everything that’s coming out is from the perspective of the survivors, of course,” Price's friend told WORT. “And it just really feels like the survivors are the ones that get to control the narrative in all this.”

Our news team has spent months reviewing the investigation of the shooting - and asking experts what broke down.

Click the link below to hear our special, investigative report.

A Fitchburg police officer shot Kevin Price on the morning of August 12th - after he placed a 911 call asking for help. WORT has this investigative report.

12/20/2024

On August 28, 1922, New York’s AT&T-owned radio station, WEAF, broadcast the first radio advertisement, a 10-minute commercial for the Queensboro Corporation, promoting the sale of the Nathaniel Hawthorne Apartments in Jackson Heights.
Queensboro paid $50 for five commercials. That’s a little over $900 today, adjusting for inflation.
Many early broadcasting stations were financed by radio equipment manufacturers, such as Westinghouse and General Electric, and radio sellers, including Gimbel’s, Bamberger’s, and Wanamaker’s.
They operated radio stations that provided programming for their customers’ purchases until performers began demanding payment for their appearances. At the same time, music publishers successfully negotiated royalty payments for the music being played.
Advertising provided an answer to how to make this new technology sustainable, but it was highly controversial.
An article in the November 1922 issue of Radio Broadcast magazine expressed horror at the prospect of stations being operated by “opportunists . . . restrained by no scruples when the scent of profit comes down the wind."
Until the mid-1920s, some stations resisted carrying commercials, but no other financing model proved practical, and by 1929, most U.S. radio stations were carrying commercially sponsored programs.
In 1934, the US established the FCC, with the authority to regulate radio broadcasting, including the content and frequency of radio commercials, ensuring that broadcasters adhere to specific standards regarding advertising practices. It was also a formal acknowledgment of stations’ right to air commercials.
In 2023, commercials were estimated to generate almost $14 billion for US radio station owners.
As an avid listener, you know WORT doesn’t subcribe to the commercial model.
Instead, we rely on you to decide what WORT shows mean to you. An honor system, idealistic model that has worked for the past 49 years.
Please consider a year-end gift that reflects your support for the work of our 300 volunteers. It’s easy to donate online via credit card or PayPal at wortfm.org/donate.
Thank you!

Madison Police have provided more details on the shooting at Abundant Life Christian School that left three people dead and six injured on Monday morning.

A 2nd-grade student was the first to call 911 to report a shooting, setting off a swift response from first responders. A timeline shared by Chief Barnes on Monday night sketches every parent’s nightmare scenario within a span of minutes:

• 10:57am — Dispatchers receive call from student reporting a shooting at the school. Officers dispatched.

• 11:00 am — A Dane County Deputy is the first to arrive on the scene.

• 11:01 am— 24 seconds later, a Madison police officer arrives on the scene and immediately enters the school.

• 11:05 am — Officers inside alert people inside the school that the shooter is down and a gun had been recovered.

• 11:05 am— First responders from the Madison Fire Department arrive on scene, and immediately render aid.

• 11:13 am— First public notice about the shooting is published to the MPD Incident Reports page.

• 11:14 am— Officers begin clearing the school.

• 11:26 am— Madison Fire Department begins transporting victims.

Chief Barnes has released the identity of the shooter: Natalie Rupnow, a 15-year old student at Abundant Life who used the name “Samantha” online.

Chief Barnes confirmed that Rupnow’s parents were cooperating with an investigation, and that a raid this afternoon at a home on Delaware Boulevard was related to today’s shooting. Police haven’t been able to verify an alleged manifesto circulating on social media, but law enforcement — including the FBI — are investigating.

Meanwhile, multiple vigils were happening within faith communities. Another vigil, led by the Madison Community Foundation, is planned for Tuesday night at 6pm, in front of the Vel Phillips statue at the State Capitol building. The United Way has established a fund to support the school’s community. To help, you can text Help4ALCS to 40403.

Abundant Life was just beginning its last week of classes before winter break.

The names of the victims are expected to be released tomorrow at 1pm.
