Three people, including a teacher and a teenage student, were killed this morning during a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School.
At least six more were injured, including two students who are in life-threatening critical condition.
“Today truly is a sad day for Madison, and for our country. It is a day that I believe will live in our collective minds for a very long time,” said Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes at a press conference this afternoon.
Barnes says officers received the call at 10:57 a.m. And when they arrived on the scene, the shooter, the third person killed, had died of a self-inflicted gun wound. No Madison police officers fired their weapons.
“We train on this constantly. Our commanders, including the Fire Chief and I, were in a commander’s training two weeks ago going over this exact same scenario for another fictional location. All of that came into play today,” said Barnes.
Police set up a reunification center at a clinic run by SSM Health Dean Medical Group, at 1821 S Stoughton Road. Ambulances, police cars and firetrucks rolled by with regularity along East Buckeye Road. And there, and throughout the day, were moments of kindness and community.
Across the street, a Kwik Trip manager loaded cartons of bottled water onto a cart, and helped run it down the road. In the parking lot of the reunification center, WORT met a therapy dog named Gary before he headed inside.
The shooting took place at Abundant Life Christian School, a private school located on East Buckeye Road. The school serves roughly 200 families, with students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

After dealing with wage theft and other forms of labor abuse, Juana and Francisco, two married migrants from Puebla, Mexico, have finally started fulfilling their dreams.
Through organized collective action and with help from Worker Justice Wisconsin, Juana and Francisco formed Los Volcanes Coop, a group of Spanish-speaking migrants who empowered themselves to create their own working conditions.
Juana's dreams as a kid in Puebla, to have her sewing machine to work on, have become a reality in Wisconsin. This is their story.

Do newly competitive legislative races in Wisconsin drive civic engagement?
Five-term Republican Assembly member Todd Novak is fighting for his political life: His new southwest Wisconsin district now includes more Democrats. About a third of his district changed in February, when Governor Tony Evers signed new voting maps into law.
Assembly District 51 now includes all of Iowa and LaFayette Counties, along with parts of Grant and Dane County. Democrats win top-of-the-ticket races in the district’s three largest cities — Mount Horeb, Dodgeville — where Novak’s 12 years as mayor ended in April — and Mineral Point.
“In my mind, I always run like I’m the underdog. This race is no different. That’s what drives me,” Novak tells Isthmus in a phone interview (the candidate did not respond to requests for in-person interviews in his district).
Novak's facing Democratic challenger Elizabeth Grabe, a real estate agent in Mount Horeb, on the ballot in November. Grabe says she was convinced to run after being shown numbers that a Democrat’s odds of winning the district went up significantly under the new maps.
“It was presented to me like ‘there’s a chance we could flip this district,” Grabe says.
Both have been door-knocking. On a recent canvassing trip accompanied by reporters from Isthmus and WORT, Grabe encountered busy parents and growling dogs — and some potential voters who were willing to talk about their top issues.
Novak's holding true to past refusals to participate in candidates’ debates or forums. He won't say why he won't participate in a forum this Monday organized by a local business group.
Has a more competitive district increased civic participation in the political process? A multimedia team from Isthmus and WORT attempted to fill in the gaps by talking to district-area voters about the race, and groups making an effort to promote debate between the candidates.
