WINONA, MINN. – The man convicted of killing Madeline Kingsbury will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Adam Fravel was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without parole for murdering the mother of his children. Her disappearance at the end of March 2023 sparked nationwide interest and a search that drew thousands of volunteers before her remains were found almost 10 weeks later.
“It is impossible to fully understand the pain you have caused, not only for those who have loved Maddi, but also your own family,” Winona County District Court Judge Nancy Buytendorp said to Fravel before sentencing him.

He was convicted last month of four counts of murder for killing Kingsbury, the mother of his young children, and hiding her body in a rural area.

The suit — which names the newspaper’s parent company, Gannett, its former pollster J. Ann Selzer and her polling firm — centers on a Selzer poll released three days before the presidential election that showed Trump trailing Vice President Kamala Harris. The poll, released by what has been considered one of the nation’s most respected polling firms, caused a national stir and buoyed some Democrats’ hopes, as it showed Harris leading Trump in the red state by three percentage points and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points. Trump ended up winning Iowa by about 13 points.

Trump’s lawsuit claims a poll by Ann Selzer for the Des Moines Register that incorrectly found he was behind in Iowa amounted to consumer fraud.

Well, Trump never succeeded in opening up those libel laws. Then again, maybe he didn’t need to: In a stunner news blast on Saturday afternoon, ABC News agreed to settle a defamation case from Trump, a deal that included this statement from the network: “ABC News and George Stephanopoulos regret statements regarding President Donald J. Trump made during an interview by George Stephanopoulos with Rep. Nancy Mace on ABC’s This Week on March 10, 2024.”The crow-eating statement wasn’t the most gobsmacking aspect of the settlement. That would be the $15 million that ABC News agreed to pay toward a “Presidential foundation and museum to be established by or for [Trump], as Presidents of the United States of America have established in the past.” ABC News will also shell out $1 million for Trump’s legal fees.Meaning: ABC News, a founding member of the mainstream media, will also serve as a founding member of the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library, or some such. That’s how big a chest-beating, lectern-pounding, crowd-pleasing victory the president-elect scored on an otherwise sleepy December weekend.

ABC News not only settled a defamation suit with Trump. It paid out $15 million. What?

Milwaukee Bucks Coach Doc Rivers opened a news conference Monday by calling the shooting at Abundant Life Christian School “a shame.”“Kids can’t go to school safe, and it just seems like we don’t do anything about it,” said Rivers, a veteran coach who was hired by the Bucks in January. “I’m not going to get up here on the podium and give a long speech except for it’s just bad, you know, and that we’re thinking about them.”

The juvenile shooter was also dead at Abundant Life Christian School on Monday, Madison Police Chief Shon F. Barnes told reporters Monday.

The Murdoch family are unlikely to get together this Christmas amid “bad blood” stemming from a Succession-style feud over who will run the show when Rupert Murdoch is gone. The patriarch, 93, ruffled the feathers of his children James, Elisabeth, and Prudence when he attempted to consolidate power around his oldest son, Lachlan. Just like in the hit HBO show, News Corp shareholders are reportedly jittery as the rifts in the family trust could lead to instability over the future direction of the business, which includes Fox News, among other media giants. A Nevada probate commissioner ruled this week that Rupert’s attempt to amend an irrevocable family trust in Lachlan’s favor, reportedly in a bid to keep his media empire’s conservative bent, was unfair. But sources say the pair won’t give up, and that could make Christmas a bit awkward. “The chances of the Murdochs gathering around the tree this year appear vanishingly small,” the Financial Times reported, citing sources close to the family.

The words Boston allegedly used — “delay, deny, depose” — are similar to those written on the ammunition that a gunman used in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City last week.

The affidavit noted the similarities between the phrases used in both incidents, adding that those words have become nationally recognized as a phrase “directed against insurance companies.”

A Florida woman who is accused of ending a call to an insurance company with the words “delay, deny, depose” was charged Tuesday.

Trump pardoned 144 Americans in his first term and commuted 94 sentences, according to statistics from the Justice Department’s Office of the Pardon Attorney. Former President Obama — under whose administration Biden was vice president — granted 212 pardons and a whopping 1,715 commutations across his two terms in office.

Biden’s acts of forgiveness this week bring him up to 65 pardons and more than 1,600 commutations total, surpassing Trump’s commutation figures and nearing Obama’s, with several weeks still to go in his single term.

President Biden pardoned 39 people and commuted the sentences of nearly 1,500 others on Thursday, a sweeping move that comes after pressure from criminal justice advocates over the surprise pardon …

I should start by saying that I have read worse children’s books. Usually, books conceived as propaganda for children where the Good Donald faces threats from ominous figures inspired by Nancy Pelosi or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez make the mistake of also rhyming, before the author has really considered whether anything rhymes with Pelosi. Patel’s books never try to rhyme, which is wise. The illustrations are colorful and fun to look at; there is a good ratio of words to pictures on each page; every so often, Patel has fun with language.
None of the books make any sense, though. But they are only broken on the deep, conceptual level that any book you wrote to impress Donald Trump in which you portrayed yourself as a loyal wizard would be broken.

I read the children’s books written by Trump’s choice to head the FBI, so you don’t have to.
