Just a head's up that things will be a little quiet around here for a bit, as we are doing some restructuring in the Parallel Press offices--a.k.a. our student assistant (me) is graduating! :) If you need anything in the meantime, don't hesitate to email Lis Owens at [email protected]. It has been nice sharing your stories and promoting all things poetry. Keep spreading the good word, poets and poetry aficionados!

Michael Dennis: Small, Imperfect Paradise - Dallas Crow

Dallas Crow's Parallel Press chapbook Small, Imperfect Paradise got some attention on poetry reviewer Michael Dennis's blog this weekend. Dennis describes the chapbook as "an emotional rollercoaster," and says, "We get brief glimpses of a happy world but in short order the wheels come off and the poems paint the collapse of a family. The redemption for the reader is in the quality of the poems."

UW Press: A Kind of Dream

Have you heard the news? Parallel Press author Kelly Cherry has a new book coming out with UW Press! Though it is technically not out until May 1, you can save by pre-ordering from Amazon.

“A Kind of Dream’s interlinked stories are about five generations of a family whose members are musicians, painters, writers, and actors. Cherry shows us ourselves and our world in surprising and beautiful ways.”
—Dwight Allen, author of The Green Suit

“Kelly Cherry has a charged intellect that enlivens whatever it lights on. In A Kind of Dream she achieves a moment of transcendence that is rare in American fiction. I have a suspicion it may be a great book.” —David R. Slavitt, author of The Duke’s Man

Silverman - Poetry - Parallel Press - UW-Madison Libraries

Look at our pretty new chapbook by Maxine Silverman! Transport of the Aim: A garland of poetry on the lives of Emily Dickinson, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, and Celia Thaxter. Read more about it here: http://parallelpress.library.wisc.edu/poetry/titles/author.shtml?Silverman

During her life, Celia Thaxter (1835-1894) was one of the most celebrated writers of her time, while Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) was known only to a small cherished group of family and friends. The two women never met, but would have been known to each other through Thomas Wentworth Higginson, a lea...

Forge » Review: Night Watch by Mark Belair

Congratulations to Parallel Press poet Mark Belair! His latest chapbook, Night Watch (Finishing Line Press), was recently reviewed by Tim McLafferty in the Forge Journal. In McLafferty's words, "...[Belair] paints, films, and sings, in equal measure, to create an intimate and genuine contemporary American poetry." Visit the link below for the full review.

http://forgejournal.com/forge/2014/01/08/review-night-watch-by-mark-belair/

Night Watch, Mark Belair’slatest chapbook, must have been difficult to write indeed, as in it, he has rendered his mother’s death, burial, and its aftermath in a suite of 19 poems. These poems have certainly been composed in three movements, acts, or galleries, as there is rhythm, drama, form, and i...

Calling all poets! Interested in contributing to a photography/poetry collaboration? Thomas Ferrella and Sara Parrell are looking for submissions of poetry for HYBRID: TRANSPORTED BY WORD & IMAGE.
Send them your poems or micro-fiction in response to the notion of HYBRID--connection, fusion, adaptation, and all the webs this word weaves in an ever-changing and increasingly complex world. Reinvent and take new roads through old territory.

They’ll choose and pair at least 36 of the submissions with a photographic image, printed in an 11” x 14” format to be placed in Green Cab of Madison taxis (all Toyota Prius hybrids) from May to October 2014.

Given the physical limitations of the project, 26 lines (poetry) and 360 words (micro-fiction) maximums are encouraged. A catalog of the full body of work will be available for sale, and cabs will be featuring the HYBIRD project on their LED cab-top lights.

An award from the City of Madison Arts Commission will provide each poet and writer with a small honorarium.

Submissions due by February 1, place "HYBRID SUBMISSION" in subject line and send to: [email protected]
Notification of acceptance by March 1.

Sara Parrell, poet and writer, co-curator

Books

We love reading good reviews of Parallel Press chapbooks! Here's one from the Fall/Winter 2013 issue of Whistling Shade, calling Dallas Crow's chapbook, Small Imperfect Paradise, "an unlikely page-turner."

http://www.whistlingshade.com/1302/chapbooks.htm

Dallas Crow’s first chapbook, Small, Imperfect Paradise (Parallel Press), is laid out like a time line of the poet’s life. Beginning with adolescent angst and Springsteen epigraphs, the poems quickly grow literary legs, and by page 9 are alluding to Hamlet and Prufrock in a Wallace Stevens parody t...
