Mine is a double espresso with some sugar. Simple 🙂

P.S. It has to be good quality though. I am European, please don't give me a Starbucks.

Here is what I just sent our via my Weekly Dose, which is a weekly dose of encouragement I send out to Christian Physicians via email.

Sometimes it's a teaching, sometimes an encouraging word, a prayer all do edify, comfort and strengthen you in your faith.
I thought I share it here...This is a word I shared at the Heal The Healers Physician Retreat last week.

Your degree of freedom and well-being in medicine is directly related to your level of intimacy with Jesus!Your degree of freedom and well-being in medicine is directly related to your level of intimacy with Jesus!

Here is the thing.

As physicians we are carry a lot of stuff. We consciously or subconsciously carry the burdens of our patients. Even though we know we are not supposed to.

Yet we do it anyway because we are caring and compassionate people and often we don’t even realize how much we are storing all the stress, burdens and pains from our patients in our bodies and souls.

This certainly happened to me over the years. As a pediatric Hem/Onc doc and bone marrow transplant physician I have seen some pretty devastating things over the years. I never felt burned out and I thought I was coping just fine even though I was constantly surrounded by pain, terrible diagnosis, immense challenges and even death.

We know we are not supposed to hold on to those burdens but somehow we do it anyways.

Jesus is supposed to hold those burdens for us. He calls us to come to him with all our burdens.

This why the following verse was the lead verse over our Heal The Healers Physician Retreat which just concluded last week. (It was amazing and I need to share more about that in another email)

Jesus says to us:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” - Matthew 11:28-29

You cannot pour from an empty cup!

We all know this but how many times are we still trying to do just that?

We keep on holding on to things because we can. We are master jugglers. Perhaps there is a degree of pride in our hearts. After all we are strong physicians!

However, carrying all those burdens of our patients and frustrations about the broken medical system (even subconsciously) causes a lot of chronic stress, physical aches and pains….

Jesus calls us to come to him and lay it all down at his feet.
That requires INTIMACY with HIM.

And…

Your degree of intimacy with Jesus directly correlates with grater degree of freedom in him and well-being despite a broken medical system.

We have to get in His presence!

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. - Psalm 147:3

Your intimacy with God is a daily surrender and decision.

I know it’s not easy with busy physician schedules but I also know from my own life that intimacy with the Lord will not happen by accident. It is our daily sacrifice to him.

So begin today.
However small.
Just get started to sit at his feet.
