Dang, I've fallen behind in updating this.

Been a busy past few months, though. Just finished mastering the new (and excellent) FiresOfficial record, did some production and mixing for Caustic, some mixing for The Lie, and a bunch of other smaller mixing and mastering contracts. More cool stuff in the pipe, too!

I'll be at Sweetwater Gearfest this weekend, so hopefully I'll remember to throw some photos of drool-worthy gear up here and stuff.

We are pleased to announce a renewed partnership with Milwaukee's Listless Works studio. Clients mixed at Listless and mastered at Submersible will receive a discount on both services.

It's pretty great, you guys.

Specific details soon.

I'm pleased to announce that Submersible Studios has been accepted as a whitelisted participant in the Apple Mastered for iTunes program.

So...what is it? Apple has a set of tools and guidelines for releases tagged as "Mastered for iTunes" - it's a series of "safety checks" to help ensure to file converts cleanly to the iTunes format, without distortions or clipping, at the best available quality.

What this means to our customers? If your label or aggregator supports MFiT submissions (24-bit uploads, primarily, with additional info for listing mastering engineer) we can provide you with masters that meet their criteria and will get your record flagged in the store as "Mastered for iTunes."

(An additional benefit is that the MFiT standards also mean conversions to MP3 and other compressed formats for streaming will generally go better)

(Hat tip to Wade Alin at Standard Mastering Chicago for helping out)

Matt Fanale of Caustic keeps asking me questions about audio, CDs, mastering, etc.

So I put together a FAQ.

http://www.submersiblestudios.com/bigfaq/

General info What's "sample rate?" "Bit depth?" Why, exactly, should I get stuff mastered? Why can't I do it myself? What're these "Loudness Wars" I keep hearing about? Mastering How should I deliver my audio to the mastering engineer? Should I leave...

Busy recently - producting tracks for Caustic, recording vocals for Sensuous Enemy, mastering their latest single, mastering the latest epic release from Thor Bremer and this Thorchestra, recording tracks for Ned Keitt-Pride's "Screaming an Angry Silence" project, and then stuff coming up for Sensuous Enemy's full-length and Reaver's new album.

Woo!

Things getting busy all of a sudden - recording vocals for Sensuous Enemy, mastering a track by Paul Dreifus, producing a new Caustic track, soon to be mastering said Caustic EP, and also mastering the new record by Thor Bremer and his Thorkestra. Whew!

I did a quick low-cost algorithmic reverb shootout. Both ValhallaDSP plugins and Eos are $50 or less, Platinumverb is free as part of Logic, and Space Designer isn't algorithmic (but it's also free with Logic).

Quiet times of late. Just finished mastering the new EP by Justin Vernon's Goddamned Cabin, though. And a crapton of work in the pipeline, too.

So. We've started mastering for vinyl. We don't make our own lacquers or anything, but we now do all the wacky stuff one needs to do to make audio that doesn't, you know, make the needle leap out of the groove of a 7" or the cutting lathe melt down to a...

Rejiggered some studio acoustics this week too, to install a new cloud absorber overly listening position, put air gaps behind all my major traps (and install some boss new lighting). Up next, building a few polycyl diffusors.

Also been messing with Slate's VCC which is pretty great and has lots of potential once I figure out how to properly gain stage with it.

Two albums mastered in the past week - Caustic's 18-track behemoth "The Man Who Couldn't Stop" and Stochastic Theory's "The Next Last Time." on deck is new stuff from Charles The Hammer, Red This Ever, and Nova Pulsar.

Finalizing a few tracks for Caustic, mixing down an album for Sumanth Swaminathan...then going to get my hair cut. It's a saturday!
