Beverly Place, a tiny cul-de-sac off of Vineville Avenue filled with English Tudor homes that feel like you stepped right into Camelot, celebrated the neighborhood’s 75th Christmas Party this year. “You always think it’s not going to happen, but then it does,” laughed organizer Megan Sapp. Between a visit from Santa and paying homage to a communal decorated tree at the end of the block, the current and former residents laughed, ate, and cheered on the Georgia Bulldogs during the SEC championship game.

Look for a story in our Dec/Jan issue next year, and in the meantime, flip through the pages of the November/December 1991 issue of Macon Magazine, featuring the forty-year celebration on Beverly Place.

We live in an age where mental health has, thankfully, become a front-and-center topic in society. This means that there is significant interest in finding ways to not only manage but to optimize and maximize our mental health. It just so happens that one of the most powerful things that we can do as individuals to positively impact our personal mental health is also one of the most accessible and easiest: Move.

Here are 4 tips to help you improve your mental health through fitness:

1. Create a routine - keep at it!
2. Go outside - Sunlight helps you synthesize Vitamin D.
3. Move with others - Take a walk with close friends.
4. Get intense - When you’re able, take your exercise up a notch!

Need more motivation? Join for Yoga in the Plaza, a free monthly session that takes place on the 2nd Friday of every month in Cotton Avenue Plaza at 6 p.m.

For many seasoned musicians, newbies, and more than a few would-be players, the Jelly Elephant is the place to be on a Saturday night. There’s room there for those who just want to listen, too.

The unique spot is up the road in Gordon, a 25-minute drive east from Macon in Wilkinson County on Highway 18, and for 20 years it’s been a hub for all kinds of good, great, and even pretty out-there music. Jelly Elephant has an outsized reputation. It may be one of Central Georgia’s best music secrets, with an iconic neon sign hung over a restored historic building.

There is a multitude of things veteran NFL linebacker Alvin “Bud” Dupree of the Los Angeles could have been doing on a Sunday morning in July. Instead, he chose to present a free football camp for Central Georgian middle and high school players.

But consistent with who he is, Dupree not only co-sponsored the event but was there in the trenches with the youngsters, instructing, encouraging, and displaying the skills it takes to make it to the NFL. Proof positive that the Wilkinson County native is committed to community.

stated, “We’re just trying to create some positive opportunities for these young men. It’s important that they know someone cares, so that’s what this is all about.”

Read excerpts from Dr. R. Kirby Godsey’s tribute to Josh Rogers in the December/January issue.

Monday, hundreds gathered in Willingham Hall on Mercer University’s campus to celebrate his life. Rogers, president and CEO of NewTown Macon, died Nov. 24 at age 42.

Remembrances were given by Dr. Godsey, Mercer’s chancellor; Kathryn Dennis, president of the Community Foundation of Central Georgia; Ethiel Garlington, executive director of The 1772 Foundation, Inc.; and Bill Underwood, Mercer’s president; and facilitated by Pastor Sara Pugh Montgomery, Centenary UMC.

Young artists from Robert McDuffie Center for Strings played Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.”

Because we’ve got stories to tell.

When an image exudes the warmth and vitality we see in our beloved Downtown Macon, we knew it was the right one for the moment…and for the ages. Social media maven Autumn Van Gunten and in-demand painter Cedric Smith welcome all as they celebrate one year in their new creative home, Rabbit Hole. Have you been?

Josh Rogers was a force for downtown Macon. If anyone ever experienced a positive attitude, saw a vision come to life, or received a loan to open a new business, it is highly likely Josh had a hand in it.

Spouse to Meaghan and father to Jack and Ellie, he died tragically Sunday evening. We grieve alongside countless family members, friends, colleagues, and admirers.

Josh was deliberate with his time leading NewTown Macon, as a civic-minded colleague and devoted friend, and as an architect for the i love macon campaign, which his class of Macon Magazine Five Under 40 young leaders helped build (see photos here). He wore his i love macon pin daily, as a sign of his fierce love for Macon.

Josh was a good doer who was quick to guide us.

“The leaders I most admire are ones who listen closely, prioritize effectively, and take quick action to accomplish shared goals... What always impresses me is how quickly these leaders hear concerns or challenges and provide solutions. My boss, Josh Rogers, is an incredible leader because of his ability to do this – whether it’s with a donor, a community partner, or a staff member. This builds trust and it makes it easier to get hard work done,” said Emily Hopkins, his coworker and NewTown’s Vice President of External Affairs in her 2024 Macon Magazine Five Under 40 feature.

“I’m constantly amazed by Maconites’ generosity, especially in a crisis,” Josh said in a June/July 2020 article featuring Good Doers in Macon Magazine.

In his honor, may we make time to connect with, love, and have a generosity with all we encounter.
