“Macon‘s story is one of passion, collaboration, and unwavering spirit,” Maribel Perez Wadsworth said in an enthusiastic social media post. “It’s a city on the move.” And wherever Macon moves, it’s dedicated partner in Knight Foundation will be a major force in pushing it forward.

Knight Foundation’s invisible influence building up our city includes pairing Maconites to network with other thought leaders from Knight cities and beyond. For example, on this fall Saturday in September, journalists from around the world traveled down to Macon to hear about the Macon Action Plan, McEachern Art Center, and the Ocmulgee National Park and Preserve Initiative as part of the Knight-powered Online News Association Conference. Pick up the Oct/Nov issue of Macon Magazine and read about the power of philanthropy on pages 36-41. On stands and online now!

Nostalgia, pride, and hope filled the heart of Downtown Macon as our community celebrated a moment that has been in the making for decades on September 19. The vision that played over and over in people’s minds was happening right in front of them. Rosa Parks Square is finally getting the renovations so many different leaders and community members worked hard for.

The greenspace named in honor of the “Mother of the Civil Rights Movement” is what it is today, and what it will become next year, because of advocacy and determination. Renovations include a stage, memorial wall, benches, tables, and lighting.

To support park efforts, join the Friends of Rosa Parks Square group on Facebook or donate to the fund held by Community Foundation of Central Georgia.

Macon-Mercer Symphony Orchestra patrons enjoyed a lively pre-concert reception with delectable bites from hosted by Macon Magazine at , among the current exhibit: Food Face, works by Stephanie Sutton. Ahead of the highly anticipated and democracy-inspired musical repertoire featuring composer Aaron Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait” orated by Macon Mayor Lester Miller and former mayors, Robert Reichert and C. Jack Ellis at , it was a joy to gather with such an inspiring community, celebrating music, art, and the connections that make Macon so special.

“I must give a giant call out to the musicians from Robert McDuffie Center for Strings! They were beyond fantastic and give me so much hope for the future of classical music ... and a heartfelt thank you to my dear friend and colleagues, Robert McDuffie and Amy Moretti for sharing these incredible musicians with me and welcoming me back to your amazing city,” concert conductor Rei Hotoda, Fresno Philharmonic’s Music Director, reflected.

If you’re ready to wind down to sweater weather and embrace autumn’s idyllic red, orange, and yellow palette, we’re eager to share six ways you can savor this fall season while protecting the natural beauty all around us.

1. Start Off Strong: set a budget to find decor pieces you’ll want to reuse every year.
2. Pick Something Biodegradable: Try cloth napkins, cotton tea towels, or table runners you can wash and reuse year after year.
3. Use Real Plants and Foliage: Create your own decor using materials straight from your local market, like cinnamon sticks, popcorn, and dried orange slices.
4. DIY Your Own Decorations: If you’ve got any old fabric or paper lying around, upcycle it into wreaths, table runners, or festive banners.
5. Opt for Soy or Beeswax-based Candles: They burn cleaner!
6. Choose Handmade Art: Bring in autumn-inspired art pieces made by local artists. For example, offers a pumpkin festival where dozens of ceramic and glass gourds are on display.

10/14/2024

When American composer Aaron Copland set out to write a piece to express the “magnificent spirit of our country,” as requested by conductor André Kostelanetz, he chose as his muse our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. Kostelanetz specifically asked the prolific music writer to compose a portrait of an esteemed American during World War II.

On October 21, the Macon–Mercer Symphony Orchestra (MMSO), comprised of McDuffie Center for Strings Young Artists and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra musicians, will perform Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait”, utilzing text from his speeches, for its season opener at The Grand Opera House. Special orators are former mayors of Macon C. Jack Ellis and Robert Reichert and Mayor Lester Miller.

How is Macon answering Lincoln’s call? We asked the mayors to share a reflection on this program as a call to our community:

“Our community is working so hard to face the issues presented by our pasts, focus on the challenges we currently face, and plan for the future…and we’re doing it together.

I went to seven elementary schools, and Southwest when it was the largest high school in the country. It all taught me that we, as people and families, face similar challenges in our lives, but we each have different ways and abilities to face them. Now, we face them together.“ - Macon Mayor Lester Miller
