Launched in 2014, The Macopolitan, is a bimonthly, print/web community publication for Macomb and McDonough County. The Macopolitan—the Mac, if you like—is a project of Western Illinois Culture and Education (WICE), a 501(c)(3) organization established in 2012. The Macopolitan wishes to advance the idea that small-town living need not be boring, provincial, or predictable! Our content will focus o

n the local arts, cultural, education, recreation, and additional "quality of life" information that you care about. We'll strive to bring you thorough and timely listings of community events in these categories, as well as creative editorial content by and about the people doing interesting things in our community—your friends and neighbors. We hope the Macopolitan will enhance local vitality by providing the community with a regular, ongoing, and accessible forum in which to discover, promote, and explore its own creative stories. The Washington Post is covering the elimination of all the librarian positions at WIU. There is a paywalled link in the comments.

Here are some highlights if you can't read the article:

Last year, Vermont State University proposed saving money by getting rid of all the books in its library.

Administrators at Western Illinois University have come up with a different solution: They’ve decided to get rid of all the librarians.

According to Inside Higher Ed, WIU plans to eliminate the nine remaining members of its library faculty by May 2025. The cuts are part of a larger “ongoing effort to achieve fiscal sustainability.”

This sounds more like a koan than a budget. I hate to break it to the bean counters, but a university library without academic librarians is called a storage room.
