Recently there has been a series of books published on the history of Mexican American baseball/softball in Kansas and Missouri. Rod Martinez, a native of Newton and a co-author of some of the books, will be coming to Lyons on July 13 for the purpose of collecting photos, newspaper clippings and personal recollections of Mexican American baseball/softball in Lyons from the 1930s and 40s to the present time.

All information collected will be used in a new book to be published in 2025 highlighting the two sports in small Kansas towns and will feature a chapter on Lyons. The game of baseball/softball played a big part of the lives of Mexican Americans in Lyons since the early part of the 20th century and it was especially useful in integrating two entirely different cultures into the city I am proud to call home.

If you have any photos, newspaper clippings or personal accounts please consider attending the meeting on July 13 or contact me at the Lyons News or on messenger. Mexican-Anglo relationships were strong in fortifyng the friendships between both cultures as is evidenced by the B & W team of the 60s that was formed and was quite successful. I will post more information as the meeting time gets closer. Thank you for your consideration. Manuel Gomez.

Boil Water Advisory Rescinded for the City of Lyons, Rice County

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the City of Lyons public water supply system located in Rice County. The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system. A failure to maintain adequate pressure can result in a loss of chlorine residuals and lead to bacterial contamination.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Lyons indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.

For consumer questions, please contact the water system or you may call KDHE at 785-296-5514. For consumer information please visit KDHE’s PWS Consumer Information webpage: kdhe.ks.gov/waterdisruption

When a public water supply system experiences a disruption in service there are precautions that consumers may need to take during and after the incident to insure water is safe to use.

:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
City Crews, APAC and other Assisting Agencies have been making repairs all day to our municipal water lines. As these repairs have been made we have had consistently low pressure in the system in some parts of town and other areas have experienced high pressure. There are 4 main areas left to make repairs and they are in the higher pressure areas. We have no good way of relieving the pressure without total system depressurization. What this will mean is shutting down our wells completely, letting all the water out of the system, making the repairs and refilling the entire system. At 10:00PM, November 19th we will totally shut down the system and will not have any water for use. We will be starting those repairs in the morning around 8:00AM. The reason for this is allowing time for the entire system to drain before repairs can be made. Once repairs are completed the system will be brought back up and we will let everyone know when water is back on. The boil water advisory will still continue to be in effect until further notice. Once water is restored, you could experience air in your system when
turning on water appliances, so please do so slowly and carefully. Please take needed precautions if your heating systems requires water and plan accordingly. Please note damage can occur to water heaters when water systems are drained. We understand the inconvenience this has and will cause but want to make sure it’s done safely and correctly. Thank you for your understanding and patience through this process.
Mayor Dustin Schultz
