What I did
I have collected 32 hi8 tapes from the 90s that I wanted to convert into the real world using MPEG-4. That is a total of 64 hours of video. Based on the number of tapes (32) at $20 each for the highest quality at the time plus adjusting for inflation to the year 2017 that comes to a total cost of $1021.
I decided to only support video tape for now because this is the industry history that I'm trying to restore from the 80s and 90s. So my goal is to do the following analog tapes: VHS, SVHS, VHS–C, SVHS-C, Video8, Hi8, Digital8, and MiniDV.
Since that time, I have I added other items to my list of products that I can convert. I can also now do 8mm film, 35mm slides, and high definition miniHDV's (1440x1080i). I have still have chosen not to do printed pictures at this point because you can at least look at them. If you're like most people you have boxes of these.
