WEDNESDAY: SNOW DAY AHEAD FOR VIRGINIA

Hi everyone!

When I posted a few days ago, I mentioned this Winter Storm would not be “Storm of the Century” type amounts, but would be plowable snow. Totals up to the 10”+ range within reach for Virginia.

Now that we’re within 3 days of storm, here’s what I can tell you:

SNOW FOR EVERYONE:
All Virginians should receive measurable snow on Wednesday—this is a large Low. Snow plows activate!

HIGHEST SNOW TOTALS:
…will be observed about 200 miles(ish)north of ENE moving surface Low…. and that places parts of Southside Virginia to Petersburg, Williamsburg and Hampton Roads in the heaviest snow swath.

SNOW AMOUNTS:
Right now, I’m thinking 3” to 6” for the Lynchburg area, and Charlottesville. (I might need to bump this up to 4” to 8” category. I’ll make that call on Monday.)

TOTALS DECREASE WEST
I’m thinking 2” to 4” for Roanoke. Snow totals increase east. Richmond 4” to 8”.

PLENTY OF SOUTHSIDE SNOW
I’m thinking 3” to 6” or 4” to 8” swaths for Southside. Amounts east of Danville= higher. Totals west of Danville= lower.

HEAVIEST VIRGINIA SNOW:
A swath of 10” totals is within reach east of I-85 and I-95, including South Hill, Petersburg, Williamsburg, Hampton Roads/Virginia Beach.

I’LL POST MY SNOW MAP ON MONDAY
I typically draw the “snow map” two days before the Winter Storm. For the snow map, I’ll be looking at the projected path of the surface Low. If it shifts N or S, that impacts the amounts, but I don’t expect a major change.

SNOW BEGINS WEDNESDAY MORNING:
Snow begins Wednesday morning for most. SW and Southside Virginia receive the first snowflakes. Then snow increases from W to E and SW to NE. You’re in it all day once the snow begins. (On Monday, I’ll also post a snow timing map.)

DURATION:
Snow falls 12 to 18 hours for most. Lighter snow could persist for a few hours beyond 18 hours too. Also, most of the precip will fall as snow— this storm is colder than the previous ones.

TRAVEL IMPACTS:
The ABC13 Weather Team will consider Wednesday and Thursday as "Weather Alert Days" due to snow on roads.

SCHOOLS:
I expect Winter Storm Watches and Warnings to be issued for much of Virginia. Widespread school cancellations should be common. Typically, schools cancel during Winter Storm Warnings. School snow days ahead starting Wednesday!

FLIGHTS:
If you have a flight on Wednesday, it might be possible that the earliest flights get out, and that is an airport/airline decision. I would reschedule for a different day.
