I moved up to Wisconsin from my home in Georgia in 2015 where I began working for my father, Chef Chris, at his crazy little restaurant called Skaliwags. I began as a dishwasher, worked my way up to bartending, and eventually, I made it in front of the grill. The first thing my dad ever taught me was how to make perfect southern grits (with a little flare of course). Most importantly though, my dad taught me to never put on my chef coat if I didn’t mean it. In my six years working for Skaliwags, I have cooked alongside some outstandingly talented chefs who challenged me every day to stay true to that most valuable lesson and I am so grateful for every other technical skill they helped me learn as well.

As my passion for cooking grew and developed, I also found a love for the community a restaurant can build. So many guests have turned to friends who have turned to family, and they taught me the importance of humility and compassion (and a good old-fashioned).

All of this to say, I am incredibly honored to be reopening the original Skaliwags in my name. Algoma, I welcome you to Son of Skaliwags!

Stay tuned for our mid-December opening date!

With love,
Chef Marshall

Last Friday I announced that it was time for me to acknowledge that I’m no longer able to continue doing the Kewaunee County Comet, a fact that has been rather obvious for several months now. I figured that was the end of my effort to try filling the news hole in the county.

By Saturday I had received many kind comments from people who expressed appreciation for what I’ve tried to accomplish over the years, but I also heard from people who may be willing to pick up the baton — I was just going to set it down, but one person in particular said, in effect, “Don’t do that, just hand that puppy over here.”

I will help this person and his colleagues as much as I’m able, but if things remain as positive as they seem in these early hours, I think you may expect to see a new version of the Kewaunee County Comet rising by fall. I’m so happy to say the county may finally be getting the local news outlet that has been lacking for so long.

Stay tuned!

Regular readers will have noticed the Kewaunee County Comet website has been significantly less active this year, and the email updates have ceased. I do share what news I see on the page.

Now I am letting the domain name expire, so it’s hard to say how long this column will remain up. I’ll post it on Facebook as well.

Shortly after the Gannett Company decided it didn’t need an onsite editor for Door or Kewaunee counties, I determined one thing I could do with my life was to try to fill the resulting news hole in Kewaunee County. Thus was born the Kewaunee County Aggregator, later Comet, on Nov. 30, 2016.

I have run it as a free service, with contributions/investments accepted, and later secured a part-time day job to help keep the lights on in our home. A couple of things have intervened: I am getting older and slower, and the day job responsibilities have grown closer to full time.

It is time for me to acknowledge I can’t maintain coverage of Kewaunee County on this site, and so, this is adieu for the Comet. I’ll keep sharing other people’s good work on the page, but my own reporting is finished.

There is still a need for unbiased, as-objective-as-possible news reporting not only in Kewaunee County but everywhere. I hope someone will step up to the plate, and I’ll be happy to provide advice and guidance to anyone who asks for help in filling this need.

I have loved covering the folks and institutions of Kewaunee County these past four-plus years — eight if you count my time overseeing the Star-News. I don’t let go lightly, which is one reason I waited months before making the obvious announcement that I’m not doing it anymore. Thank you to all of the people who have helped me along the way. You deserve full-time attention from a responsible news outlet. It just can’t be me anymore.

Godspeed, Kewaunee County, and thanks for everything.
