School board candidates that ended in a tie now to be decided by runoff election!!

After a clarification from the Mississippi Secretary of State office, a runoff election will now be held in the case of George County School Board Beat 5.

The two candidates, Della Maples Morgan and Wade Whittington each received 902 votes.

Originally the candidates were going to meet to have one name drawn from a hat to select the winner. This would have been similar to what happened in George County in the 1980s when two candidates also ended in a tie in their respective election.

The runoff election will take place Tuesday, November 26.

On this date there will also be a runoff election for school board Beat 3. This runoff will be between James โ€œPankyโ€ Hill and Jimmy Deese after the candidates were the top two finishers in their race that consisted of three candidates.

The burn ban has been lifted for George County (and the City of Lucedale).

Itโ€™s a tie! For now.
Maples 902
Whittington 902

โ€œMy one vote will not matter.โ€ Thatโ€™s probably a common statement you hear around election time. But thatโ€™s not the case in the Beat 5 race for George County School Board.
After all ballots were counted Wednesday afternoon it was declared a tie 902-902 for both candidates -Della Maples Morgan and Wade Whittington.

Today (11/13/24) is when ballots could be accepted as long as they were postmarked by the date of the election. Final affidavits were also verified at this time.

The candidates now have 48 hours to agree on a time to meet at the courthouse. The top possibility to decide the winner will be to draw a name out of a hat.
