Change to the previous update
The individual crime map has been reinstated, but with a new condition: Crimes viewed must be either verified by an article or by Lowell PD.
If other verification methods (i.e. verified by arrest, verified by evidence, unverified) are checked off, the point map cannot be used.
The update is now live and can be viewed at http://lowellvcm.com. A video is attached below on how to access this feature.
(Because only certain crimes can be viewed on this map, the ability to create a URL to a certain crime has been disabled)
Earlier tonight, Lowell PD responded to a gunshots call where officers reported hearing gunfire as well, but later the call went unfounded by officers. This is not unlike most nights in the city where calls for shots fired often yield no results. This raises the question of when will the city finally have a gunshot detection system like many other MA cities including Cambridge, Boston, Worcester and Springfield.
In June 2022, the city received $95k for a gunshot detection system from the state. Nothing more came out of that until May 2023 when in a city council meeting, Deputy LeBlanc stated that the PD was not interested in any technology like that.
Why the change-up and what happened to the $95k that was allotted for the technology?
(Attached are some of the documents relating to the grant as well as a portion of the city council meeting relating to the gunshot detection system).
