We actually did make it to Orlando to AKC National Championship by Royal Canin! It was nice to see huge entries from other breed and their specialities, although I haven’t had a chance to see all the breeds I was hoping for. It was the biggest Open show I’ve seen to date with 76 entries. Heike came back with BOS and we headed to Daytona to look at the Ocean before coming back home

Yesterday we learned about a huge blow to the breed. We discovered UKC announced breed standard changes to Presa Canario!!! Breed standards should never be changed unless there is an actual need to fix wrong wording coming of inaccurate translation. Changing a breed standard is changing the breed.

It wasn’t done in a professional manner too. Mask is referred to as fault when reaching less then half of the face. How do we define face in breed standard? Half the muzzle? Weight is much higher than in FCI standard - why? Panda color (yikes!!! What is panda color in profesionalndesfriptionnof the breed!) is a dq… you mean piebald? Wasn’t spots on the body self explanatory? Length of body set at 20% longer than hight in the withers. Breed standard aka for 18-20 it’s important to add the 18 and not make it seam the breed needs to be long as a freight train. Croup is higher then withers but dq for to high. How to high is to high? Dq for to strength hindquarters (they use legs… really). What breed standards do it in this manner?

But most important thing is who instigated those changes? All people involved highly in UKC conformation and performance events were shocked. We don’t have a breed Club with UKC. Breeders didn’t unite to sit and talk the importance of introducing changes. Somebody made a decision to change the breed and it seams as if it was made as a whim of one party!!!

I hope we get answers from UKC!

Write to UKC with questions. Protect our breed!

We already had it destroyed when FCI started to change breed standard. FCI was finally forced to remove changes they made and accept original breed standard and now somebody used parts of this inaccurate breed standard to push them in UKC: we need answers and we need to stop it. If there is a need to change breed standard we need a committee who will work on this and make it in professional manner

The fawn crew! Interestingly the if there happens to be one without masks they’re always significantly bigger than the rest of the puppies, despite the fact the ones with the mask are already big

Letters from Raymond

A Bull Terrier Mentorship by W.E. Mackay-Smith

Through a totally unforseen set of circumstances, Winkie Mackay-Smith “backed into” the ownership of her first two bull terriers, and naively undertook their respective show careers with very limited expectations. In 1969, due to a “tip” from Alva Rosenberg, a famous terrier judge, to his friend Raymond Oppenheimer, a famous breeder of bull terriers in England, she and her husband, Matthew, were invited by Oppenheimer to visit the Ormandy-Souperlative kennels in White Waltham, England. There they met Raymond and his business partner and kennel manager, Eva Weatherill, and formed a bond with both of them which lasted until Raymond’s death in 1984, and Eva’s in 1993.

Both Raymond and Eva undertook an extensive correspondence with Winkie, during which time she was tutored in the arts of breeding, showing, judging, and changing the methods of incentivising the breeding of better dogs by the B.T.C.A.

During the next 15 years, Winkie was exposed to the joys and perils of active participation in the breed scenario, carefully encouraged and occasionally berated by her mentors. Raymond was a very thorough tutor, often delving into the history of the breed to make his points, and encouraging many changes in the breed picture in the U.S. via his group of correspondents, of which Winkie was one.

A wonderful host, Raymond welcomed all who were seriously interested in the breed to his home in White Waltham, and treated his guests and pupils to a whirlwind of activity and conversation which had an enormous impact on bull terriers everywhere. Winkie was a frequent visitor, and this book details her experiences through Raymond’s and other correspondence together with her own recollections of those amazing times.
