This is going to save lives for sure. For many many years Methadone was the only form of maintenance treatment available for people trying to stop using opioids.
It saved and continues to save countless lives every day, but for some the drawbacks made this option a nonoption.
Methadone Clinics require patients go to a clinic setting and take the medication in front of a nurse, see a councilor weekly, and follow whatever rules the clinic has.
Those things are actually beneficial to anyone begining down the road to recovery because it introduces them back into the world and many of these patients haven't had somewhere to be on a certain day at a certain time in years.
Now they must show up anywhere from 5am to 12pm or they miss their medication that keeps then from going into withdraw and no body wants that.
They also have a therapist that cares and is willing to assist them with daily basic needs as well as work in mental health and coping mechanisms. Many patients haven't had anyone look them in the eyes much less talk and listen to them for far too long.
Plus they aren't being handed a months worth of medication and this in the beginning is essential for many who suffer from Substance use disorder. If they were given 30 doses they could over medicate themselves or even sell their methadone to buy dope.
So it's a great set up but it doesn't fit everyone, nothing is a one size fits all.
When suboxone first came around it made it possible for people who couldn't get to a clinic daily to benefit from maintenance treatments because they just went to a doctors office and the first two weeks they came weekly, then every two weeks and eventually once a month.
This opened the door for people without rides or who worked jobs that made getting to a clinic within their hours of operation impossible.
Now patient's can work a program online and receive Suboxobne. This is opening the door for even more people. Now everyone should be able to find relief no matter what may have hindered them before.
