⚽ Louisville City FC and head coach Danny Cruz are looking ahead to an exciting 2025 season with a new multi-year contract and 18 players returning from their record-setting 2024 campaign. Cruz, named the 2024 USL Championship Coach of the Year, guided LouCity to a 24-6-4 record, a league-high 76 points, and the club’s first-ever Players’ Shield.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue my journey with Louisville City FC,” Cruz said. “While the 2024 season was a success, we fell short when it mattered most. This fuels our determination for 2025, and I’m excited to push forward with this incredible group of players and staff.”

⚽ Cruz, LouCity’s winningest and longest-tenured coach, will enter his fifth season as head coach. Under his leadership, the club has secured an Eastern Conference title (2022) and consistently demonstrated elite performance. LouCity president James O’Connor stated, “We believe Danny is the best young coach in the country. We’re proud of 2024 but feel we have unfinished business in 2025.”

The club is bringing back key players like Phillip Goodrum, Wilson Harris, Amadou Dia, and Sean Totsch, among others. Negotiations with additional returning players are ongoing, promising even more depth for the upcoming season.

Despite their achievements, LouCity’s 2024 campaign ended unexpectedly in the playoffs, falling to Rhode Island FC. “We know how 2024 finished, and that will fuel us moving forward,” Cruz said. “We are determined to build a team capable of winning a third USL Championship title.”

LouCity fans can look forward to another thrilling season as the club aims for greatness once again.

Julia Cash, a Louisville native and globally trained musician, is using her talents to create positive change through her nonprofit, Music for a Purpose. Based in her hometown, this organization produces concerts that benefit local charities, blending her passion for music with a drive to address pressing social and environmental issues.

Cash’s musical journey began at age four with piano and transitioned to violin at six, inspired by her parents, both professional pianists. Her education at New England Conservatory, studies in Germany, and Artist Diploma at the Royal Dutch Conservatory shaped her professional career. She’s performed worldwide but remains committed to giving back to Louisville, the city closest to her heart.

Music for a Purpose funds its free-to-attend concerts through grants and donations. Audiences are encouraged to contribute to partner charities, with 100% of proceeds supporting local organizations. In 2024, they raised over $17,000 for causes like climate action, parks preservation, and youth support. This month’s performances, Jan. 10 at Bellarmine University and Jan. 11 at Highland Presbyterian Church, will benefit Kentucky Refugee Ministries (KRM).

KRM’s mission resonates deeply with Cash, whose childhood friend’s mother founded the organization. KRM has helped over 30,000 displaced individuals build lives in Kentucky while fostering community and cultural awareness.

By blending art with advocacy, Julia Cash proves the power of music to inspire change and build a better future.

Dean Otto, the Curator of Film and head of Speed Cinema at the Speed Art Museum, has been a cornerstone of Louisville's film culture since the cinema's opening nearly a decade ago. Esteemed filmmaker Owsley Brown III praises Otto’s ability to unite people through cinema: “He has dedicated his life to fostering the idea that we are all part of one human family, using cinema as a forum to gather and relish the magic and wonder of the cinematic mirror.”

Otto’s love for film began in his blue-collar hometown in Wisconsin, where movies offered a glimpse of the world beyond. While attending the University of Wisconsin, Madison, his passion grew as he programmed and presented films, collaborated with artists, and even worked with icons like John Waters. His career blossomed at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, where he hosted acclaimed directors like Spike Lee, Jane Campion, and Werner Herzog.

At Speed Cinema, Otto builds connections between filmmakers and audiences by curating world-class programs. From celebrating world cinema to fostering young film enthusiasts with international children’s films, his work ensures cinema is a shared experience tied to history, art, and community.

A film close to Otto’s heart is Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love: “The romantic longing ignites the screen,” he says, recalling how he brought friends to see the film night after night.

Exciting upcoming events include Dahomey by Mati Diop, All We Imagine as Light by Payal Kapadia, and Vermiglio by Maura Delpero, along with Roger Bebe’s multi-projector performances and Songcatcher, part of the first Science on Screen series.

Otto’s vision ensures that Speed Cinema remains a hub for culture, creativity, and connection.

01/10/2025

Imagine walking a 2x4 on the ground—simple, right? Now picture that same board 200 feet in the air between two buildings. Suddenly, fear takes over, and what was easy becomes impossible. This is the Missing Bannister Theory. Fear limits us, but regret? That’s the real risk.

Whether it’s art, business, or asking someone out, there’s a superpower in letting go of fear. Taking risks is scary, but what’s scarier is looking back one day wishing you’d tried.

We often get so focused on the goal that we forget to enjoy the journey. But here’s the truth: the person you become on the way to the goal is often more important than the goal itself. The reward is in the pursuit, not just the destination.

In music, we don’t skip to the last chord. We savor the whole song. When we dance, it’s not about rushing to the end but about the dance itself. Life is no different. Why hurry to the finish line when the beauty is in every step along the way?

One day, you’ll wake up, and you might think, “I’ve arrived.” But the truth is, life isn’t about arriving anywhere. It’s about singing, dancing, and creating while the music plays.

Every day is a gift. Tomorrow isn’t promised. Even reading this magazine costs you something precious: your time. Use it wisely.

🎨 ARTIST CHALLENGE: Create an image that captures the fleeting beauty of life and submit to antoniopantoja.

🎶 Meet Cait Justice: The Appalachian Songbird Making Waves! 🌄
Cait Justice, a self-taught Folk/Americana singer-songwriter from Pikeville, KY, is the newest artist signed to sonaBLAST! Records. Her hauntingly beautiful voice and evocative lyrics capture the spirit of Appalachia, telling stories rooted in the region’s rich history and her personal experiences.

Cait’s journey began with a chance meeting at the Monarch, leading to a whirlwind collaboration. Within weeks of signing, Cait recorded her debut album, Angel Teeth, at Louisville’s iconic LaLaLand Studios with producer Anne Gauthier. Featured on the record are talented musicians Johnny Berry (steel lap guitar), Chris Rodahaffer (guitar/mandolin), banjo maestro Steve Cooley, and fiddler Blakeley Burger. 🎻✨

🎥 During recording, Longshot Records documented Cait for a new series highlighting emerging Kentucky musicians. Director Evan Mascagni recalls being captivated by her raw, compelling sound: “Cait’s unique spirit and voice were undeniable—we couldn’t wait to showcase her talent.”

Her musical influences stem from growing up in the mountains, singing in choirs, and teaching herself guitar and ukulele. Cait reflects, “Music is a natural progression of Appalachia’s oral folklore—it’s a beautiful thing.” Her songs, like "Mud Creek Morning," weave stories of home, heartache, and resilience. 🌿❤️

Catch Cait performing regularly at the Monarch and beyond. Her debut album drops early 2025—get ready to be moved by this landlocked siren’s unforgettable sound!

🏀 Pat Kelsey Brings New Hope to Louisville Basketball
Pat Kelsey is just 11 games into his first season as Louisville’s basketball coach, but he’s already shown he was the right choice to lead the Cardinals back to prominence.

The latest evidence? Louisville’s hard-fought 93-85 loss to No. 5 Kentucky. While the Wildcats won for the sixth time in seven meetings, this game was a stark departure from the blowouts of recent years. U of L battled back repeatedly, cutting the deficit to three points twice in the second half.

Despite injuries that have left the team with only eight healthy scholarship players, the Cards are competing with toughness and grit. UK coach Mark Pope was impressed: “Hats off to Louisville. Those guys are playing so hard right now. Pat is doing an unbelievable job coaching that group. They’ve got a ton of heart and leadership.”

Even before the UK game, Kelsey had given fans reason for hope. Using the transfer portal, he built a cohesive new roster, energizing a program that had hit rock bottom. Louisville has taken on a brutal early schedule, with all its losses to ranked teams and two to top-five opponents. In the Bahamas, they routed then-No. 14 Indiana 89-61 and upset West Virginia in overtime before narrowly losing to No. 13 Oklahoma.

“We’re figuring out a new identity,” Kelsey said. “Our guys keep showing their character by fighting through adversity.” Injuries to key players, including forward Kasean Pryor and guard Koren Johnson, have forced others into expanded roles. But with versatile forward Aboubacar Traore expected back soon, depth should improve.

Point guard Chucky Hepburn remains confident: “We’re going to dig deep, trust our coach’s system, and find ways to win games.” With only one ranked opponent left on the ACC schedule, the Cards are poised for continued progress.

From Struggle to Success: Kaitlyn Hubert’s Journey of Resilience

Kaitlyn Hubert is a force of nature—an entrepreneur, stylist, and founder of the Tomboy Hair Care line and Pelo Beauty Collective. With over 148,000 Instagram followers, her rise to prominence seems effortless, but her path was anything but easy. Behind the curated posts lies a powerful story of recovery, determination, and transformation.

Fifteen years ago, Kaitlyn faced the depths of addiction, losing custody of her children and entering The Healing Place in Louisville. It was a turning point. “While it was a time filled with uncertainty, it also became a space for healing,” she shares. Her sobriety journey began on New Year’s Day 2014, marking a commitment to reclaim her life.

Through relentless dedication, Kaitlyn rebuilt her world, regaining custody of her children—a defining victory that became her driving force. Fueled by her triumphs, she launched Tomboy Hair Care in 2018, addressing a gap in gender-neutral styling products. Today, her brand thrives alongside three inclusive and uplifting salon spaces in Louisville and Lexington.

“My journey has taught me challenges can become opportunities for growth,” Kaitlyn reflects. “I want my story to inspire others to see that change is always possible.”

Her life is a testament to second chances, resilience, and the belief that it’s never too late to rewrite your future.

Charlene Hampton Holloway: A Legacy of Courage and Education

Tracing Black genealogy in the U.S. often reveals the complexities of identity. For Charlene Hampton Holloway, this quest began at age 13, ignited by witnessing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lead Civil Rights marches in Atlanta, GA. Inspired by those experiences, Holloway became an activist, joining the NAACP and CORE, and even facing arrest during Louisville’s peaceful protests in 1961.

Her passion for justice didn’t waver. Three years later, she joined 10,000 others in Frankfort, KY, marching alongside Dr. King. Today, Holloway reflects on how those formative years shaped her purpose and dedication to uplifting others through education and storytelling.

As an author and public speaker, Holloway continues to champion Black history, civil rights, and lifelong learning. At 75, she enrolled at Simmons College of Kentucky, an HBCU, and is now pursuing a degree in Organizational Leadership at the University of Louisville. Her journey is a testament to resilience, showing her family and the world that it’s never too late to learn, grow, and inspire.
