Today, we pay respect and honor the legacy of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away this Sunday at the age of 100. President Carter dedicated his life to public service, advocating for social and economic policies that supported people’s well-being at home and abroad.

Ahead of his time, in many ways, he fiercely supported women’s rights, recognizing global discrimination and abuse against women and girls as one of the most urgent challenges of our time. Notably, he issued the first presidential proclamation designating the first week of March as Women’s History Week—a milestone that eventually evolved into Women’s History Month. After his presidency, he would continue his work as a human rights activist under the Carter Center–whose mission is to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health.

President Carter’s leadership and memory remind us of the power of advocacy and the key role that elected officials play in advancing women’s equality.

For the first time in history, women will hold the majority on the Los Angeles City Council. This significant milestone follows the swearing-in of council-members Ysabel Jurado and Heather Hutt, who are also the first women and women of color elected to represent their respective council districts. 👏

The First Bro at all functions is creepy as hell! 👇🏽

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has arrived at Notre Dame Cathedral to attend the reopening ceremony.

He’s one of the VIP guests invited alongside some religious officials and world leaders, including President-elect Donald Trump.

More context: Musk has emerged as a key player in Trump’s orbit and has been tapped by the president-elect to co-lead the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency. Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars to get Trump elected, CNN reported this week. CNN

California will see a record-high 59 women serving in the next legislative session. And for the first time in state history, there will be more women than men in the state Senate.

Who are these women legislators?
🟣 47 Democrats
🟣 12 Republicans
🟣 68 percent are women of color
🟣 34 are representing Southern California
🟣 17 are representing Northern California
🟣 8 are representing the Central Valley

None of the world’s top 10 economies has reached gender parity in its legislature, but California — which ranks fifth, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis — is now the closest at 49 percent — according to the Center for American Women in Politics. The United Kingdom is the second closest with 40.5 percent women in its House of Commons.

Close the Gap is a nonprofit that recruits women to run for office. In 2012, California underwent a term limit reform which caused about 90 percent of legislative seats to open up between 2022 and 2028. Close the Gap seized an opportunity to target open and flippable districts. According to the organization, about 40 percent of the women who will serve this upcoming session were recruited by Close the Gap.

“If it wasn’t for Close the Gap approaching me and making me think that becoming a legislator was even possible for me, I don’t think I’d be here today,” Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, Assembly Majority Leader and incoming Women’s Caucus chair, said in a statement.

The organization said it recruits “accomplished, diverse and progressive women” and helps them launch competitive campaigns. Close the Gap has already spent a year working with women who are considering running in 2026 and will soon begin recruiting for the 2028 cycle.

“California women leaders authored vital legislation to protect freedoms and communities under attack during the first Trump presidency,” Susannah Delano, Close the Gap’s executive director, said in a statement. “The difference between then and now is that we have twice as many women in the Legislature in 2025, and I have no doubt you will see California women rise to the challenges ahead.”
