On December 16, 1960, comedy legend Lucille Ball made her Broadway debut in Wildcat at the Alvin Theatre (now the Neil Simon Theatre). The musical, with a book by N. Richard Nash and music by Cy Coleman, marked a significant moment in Ball’s career as she transitioned from her immense television success on I Love Lucy to the demanding world of Broadway. On opening night, her long-time friend and I Love Lucy co-star, Vivian Vance, paid her a visit in her dressing room, showcasing their enduring bond both on and off the stage.

Wildcat told the story of Wildcat “Wildy” Jackson, a determined woman searching for oil in a rugged frontier town. Lucille Ball’s energetic and comedic portrayal of the title character was the centerpiece of the production, with standout songs like “Hey, Look Me Over,” which went on to become a popular standard. Despite Ball’s charismatic performance, the show received mixed reviews and struggled with production challenges, ultimately closing after 171 performances in June 1961.

The friendship between Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance, who played Ethel Mertz on I Love Lucy, was one of the most iconic partnerships in television history. Their personal camaraderie was evident as Vance showed her support on such an important night for Ball. This visit underscored their mutual respect and affection, which continued long after I Love Lucy ended.

Although Wildcat was a short-lived venture, it remains a cherished chapter in Lucille Ball’s storied career. The production highlighted her versatility as a performer and her willingness to take risks. The moment with Vivian Vance in her dressing room further reflects the deep connections formed in show business and the enduring legacy of two of television’s most beloved stars.

“'Never Be You' was a hit years ago, but not for Petty and his Heartbreakers. The song was written by the rock star but recorded by Rosanne Cash. Her take was a chart win, though it was pushed to the country crowd. Now, it’s become a rock smash as well, though it has yet to hit No. 1 on any tally, like Cash’s managed to."

Tom Petty's new posthumous single “Never Be You” rises to a new peak on one of Billboard's radio charts while returning to another, even more competitive list.

"Fiona Apple is arguably the greatest songwriter of her generation, but she is also one of the finest interpreters of other people’s songs.

Her contributions to the 2009 tribute album The Best Is Yet to Come: The Songs of Cy Coleman are easily the standout performances on the record. Fiona Apple imbues both ‘Why Try to Change Me Now?’ and ‘I Walk a Little Faster’ with remarkable sensitivity and a gentle, shimmering power. Her live rendition of ‘I Walk a Little Faster’ at the album’s tribute show was even more stirring, showcasing the timeless depth, natural beauty, and delicate yet powerful fragility of her voice."

Fiona Apple is arguably the greatest songwriter of her generation, but she is also one of the finest interpreters of other people’s songs.

I’m thrilled to announce that today I’m releasing on my own RumbleStrip Records a new collection that greatly expands on the 2010 Sony Essential release. This new compilation includes 40 songs across 42 years from all 15 of my albums. Here’s an excerpt from my liner notes:

“Two discs, forty years. Sometimes I felt it didn’t matter, and then one of you—maybe one of you who is reading this right now— told me after a show or wrote me a letter saying that one of these songs helped you through a break-up or a death, or was played at a wedding or a funeral, or maybe that it just soothed you at the end of a grueling day, or inspired you to write your own songs. Thank you. I heard you.

I couldn’t have done anything else in my life but write songs and make music, so I’m lucky I was able to carve a spot and have it held open by so many people, most especially the fans.

Artists do evolve— if in nothing else, then in gratitude, and in the realization that time is the most precious resource.
I don’t enshrine the work here, but I treasure it.
This is how I spent my time.”
