THIS IS 40: Van Halen singer David Lee Roth kick-started his solo career in earnest with the December 19, 1984 release of his first solo single, CALIFORNIA GIRLS. A cover of the Beach Boys classic, Roth’s zany version was a hit, sauntering up the Hot 100 to peak at #3 for the week of March 2, 1985.

FUN FACT: both real-life Beach Boy Carl Wilson and Christopher Cross performed background vocals on the track https://www.rhino.com/article/december-1984-david-lee-roth-releases-california-girls

BUT I WON’T CRY FOR YESTERDAY: For a band so inextricably tied to the 1980s, New Wave icons Duran Duran scored one of its biggest and most memorable hits amidst the chaotic rise of grunge and gangster rap in 1992 with ORDINARY WORLD.

Released December 1992 in America, the tune debuted at #67 on the Hot 100 for the week of January 9, 1993 (the single was released January 18, 1993 in the UK).

ORDINARY WORLD rocketed up the Hot 100 chart, eventually peaking at #3 for the week of February 20, 1993.

It took a pair of monster hits to block “ORDINARY WORLD from the top spot: Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” at #1, and Peabo Bryson with “A Whole New World (Aladdin’s Theme)” at #2

YOU GOT TO ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES TO GET TO WHAT’S REAL: it was December 1983 when Van Halen released the lead single from their blockbuster 1984 album: JUMP.

The relatively radical track expanded the band’s hard-rocking style with a catchy synthesizer hook and new pop sensibilities. The song not only went on to be Van Halen’s lone #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, it still stands among the most popular “Jock Jams” heard blasting at American sporting events.

December 17, 1971, David Bowie released fourth studio album HUNKY DORY.

Although now widely acknowledged as one of the best albums in Bowie’s catalog, HUNKY DORY didn’t make a dent on the U.K. album charts upon its 1971 release. It wasn’t until August 1973 that it finally peaked in the U.K. top 5 in the wake of a reissue of “Life on Mars?” following the 1972 release of Bowie’s breakthrough album THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS.

Lead single “Changes” was never a top 40 hit in the U.K., although it did peak at 41 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1975. It has long since stood alongside second single “Life on Mars?” as one of the several beloved Bowie classics featured on HUNKY DORY, which also include “Kooks,” “Queen Bitch,” “Oh! You Pretty Things,” “Quicksand,” and “The Bewlay Brothers.”

‘CAUSE CHRISTMAS AIN’T THE TIME FOR BREAKING EACH OTHER’S HEART: It was November 1987 when Ramones rocked the holidays with the release of MERRY CHRISTMAS (I DON’T WANT TO FIGHT TONIGHT).

Originally released as a b-side to the single I WANNA LIVE, the punk rock Christmas classic made its LP debut as the last track on Ramones’ 1989 full-length, BRAIN DRAIN.
