HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JAMES YANCEY A.K.A. J DILLA! His music will forever influenced my music productions. His music taught me the following techniques:
1. Dilla Swing - Micro timing variations in the placement sounds, so the drums and sample chops play loosely and not stiff and robotic.
2. Mixing Time Signatures - Mixing a 3/4 sample chops with a 4/4 drum patterns.
3. Chopping samples at Chord Changes - By far my favorite. I can rearrange the chords in a sample into a whole new song. As opposed to just looping and existing chord progession.
4. Odd Entrances and Off Loop Points - Sampled loops start on odd or off beat points in the sample.
5. Verbal Illusions - Rearranging a vocal samples to say something entirely different.
6. Jazz Chords Usage - I fell in love with Jazz chords, when I heard Blue in Green by Miles Davis. Dilla kick started my exploration of Jazz theory, which led me to a book that forever influenced Miles Davis...The Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization by George Russell. (The title is a mouthful)
