Our bit of coastal Japan didn’t provide too many waves while we were there. Quite crumbly, but was somehow still good enough for Noa to get airs, for Jaleesa and Kaito to carve the s**t out of it all, and for Craig to be more stylish than anyone, or as Fev says, ‘like a feather on the wave’. Kaito was the real MVP, phoning up every friend he had between Chigasaki and Ibaraki asking about the weather, on shore vs off shore, and if we could pull up on their spots as respectfully and discreetly as possible. Kaito was a weatherman and a great scout, without whom we would have been sitting on the sand for a couple weeks straight playing badminton and marveling at the thousands of tiny clams that hung out just beneath the sand’s wet surface. It’s quite a cool thing that every member of the team surfs, and every single member got a wave on that trip, whether it be Jake’s left at the pool or Fev’s log session at sunset. There’s something special about surfing on that coast. Whichever direction you look, you’re seeing something beautiful. It is notoriously difficult to street skate in Japan. The country isn’t down. Though there is an abundance of spots, there is no skating them because of how strict and prominent security and police are. You have to be decisive and intentional about when, how, and for how long you hit a spot, and to find that out, you usually need to know someone. the Yokohama-based skate filmer we met up with for the trip, had us locked in. He opened Google Maps to the country of Japan and the topography was completely invisible, obscured by pins - seemingly hundreds of them - each one indicating the location of a skate spot, photos of the spot, and the times in which one would be able to skate them. He is something of a skateboarding gem in Japan, and if it weren’t for him, we’d have been skating flat in front of the hotel for two weeks.
