This survey highlights many of the serious issues associated with Vodou, sometimes known as Voudon or 'voodoo'. Originating among the Yoruba people of West Africa, primarily in Nigeria and Benin, Vodou is a complex set of religio-magical beliefs with historical and ongoing ties to the slave trade. These beliefs were brought to the New World by enslaved West Africans during the era of European slave trading. Today, Vodou is practiced worldwide, transcending racial and national boundaries, partly due to its adaptation for the New Age marketplace.
Vodou entered the New World via the trans-Atlantic slave routes, primarily through Haitian slave ports and subsequently into the United States, notably through ports in Louisiana. Yoruban beliefs were often masked with Catholicism to hide these practices from slaveowners, resulting in the syncretic religions of Haitian Vodou and New Orleans 'voodoo', among others.
Legalized slavery remains a profound stain on the conscience of Western powers, who now strive to redefine themselves in light of their past actions. However, slavery has always been a global issue, and continues today under the guise of human trafficking. Nigeria, Benin, and Haiti remain major hubs for the trafficking of human beings, with New Orleans historically being a significant intake center for slaves in the United States.
This site surveys literature connecting Vodou to modern-day human trafficking, murder, child sacrifice, and other crimes. The thesis of this survey is that in many instances Vodou, rather than being a force for liberation as some portray it, is a central component of ongoing global slavery. It is used by traffickers to psychologically control their victims, primarily women and children... https://endvoodootrafficking.org/
