full-circle view of the oldest living banyan tree in maui in 21 frames.
totally unrelated audio from some musical experimentation a bit back.
from the wikipedias:
The banyan tree in Lahaina, in Maui, Hawaii, United States, was planted on April 24, 1873, in Lahaina to mark the 50th anniversary of the arrival of first American Protestant mission. The banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis) known in Hawaiian as paniana, located in the Courthouse Square, which was renamed Banyan Tree Park covering 1.94 acres, is not only the largest in the state but also in the United States. The tree was a gift from missionaries in India. A mere 8 feet (2.4 m) when planted, it has grown to a height of about 60 feet (18 m) and has rooted into 16 major trunks, apart from the main trunk, with the canopy spread over an area of about 0.66 acres (0.27 ha).
Song for Jennie Berger
. . .
It's funny and wildly heartening, the mundane things in life that force you to jump the tracks and leave your daily routine—even for a moment—and appreciate the beauty of life.
. . .
We get our oil changed at a mechanic next to Hollywood Forever Cemetery, which usually takes about an hour to have done and results in me wandering around the cemetery grounds, taking in the smallest of glimpses of so many life stories; people who lived more than a century before me and some who left us only recently. I try—and always fail—to get close enough to the cats that live in the cemetery to pet them; take photographs of the memorials and statues and peacocks who also call the place home. Today I wandered into one of the many mausoleums on the estate, one I'd never been in before, and happened across this strange old piano. Only a quarter of the keys worked, but I sat for a while in the tranquility of the place and played and thought about all the stories that surround us, old and new, and how beautiful and important they all are once we give them time and audience; when we make the effort to listen to the voices, dead and living. This life is full of such great diversity and so many disparate stories and thoughts and opinions that we all too often react to with violence or hate or—really, at the root—fear; it's so much more productive and rewarding to take the time to just listen, I think, and then talk, and then listen again; while we can and before those voices and stories quiet and fade.
. . .
So here's to Jennie Berger—I know not a thing about you, but I hope you had a life well-lived, and I hope to have done the same when it all fades.
