Let’s Go! Join the fight to protect California entertainment jobs and “Keep California Rolling.”

For over a century, California has been the heart of the global film and television industry, supporting hundreds of thousands of middle-class workers and fueling a vast network of local businesses, tourism, and economic growth. However, in recent years, increasing competition from other states and countries, compounded by economic downturns, corporate contraction and devastating wildfires, have put California’s entertainment workforce and our staple and lucrative industry at risk.

Expanding California’s Film & Television Jobs Program is essential to ensuring the industry remains a major economic driver and continues to support jobs, businesses, and tourism in the state. Without this investment, California risks losing its status as the global entertainment capital, along with thousands of middle-class jobs and billions in economic benefits

Filmed in Los Angeles and now showing:

Now playing in theaters, the buddy-comedy “One of Them Days” features urban Los Angeles as its backdrop. Well-known LA streets La Brea, Hillcrest, and Crenshaw get a shout-out as the characters zigzag around LA. Filming locations include a strip mall in Hyde Park, an apartment complex in Baldwin Hills, and retro diner Norm’s Restaurant in West Hollywood.

Now streaming on Hulu, the thriller “Paradise” is set in DC but films mostly in Los Angeles. The series prominently features a house in the Holmby Hills neighborhood on the Westside of LA. Other LA locations include the Skirball Cultural Center and the Franklin Village neighborhood.

Like the original series, the Paramount+ prequel “Dexter: Original Sin” films predominantly in Greater Los Angeles, despite its Miami setting. LA locations include the Morgan House in Valley Village and residential areas of the West Adams neighborhood, Van Nuys, and Sherman Oaks. Radford Studio Center is home to the show’s main interior sets, such as the Miami Metro PD headquarters and the Morgan family home.

On behalf of FilmLA’s DEI Committee we would like to present our second in a series of LA Gems, where we visit culturally diverse locations significant to filming in Los Angeles. With the start of the Lunar New Year, we selected Chinatown to commemorate some of their historical sites.

Featured: West Gate and Entrance to the Central Plaza

The oldest of the four gates leading to Chinatown’s Central Plaza, the West Gate was the stage for the 1938 Lunar New Year parade and Chinatown’s Grand Opening celebration. The four Chinese characters above the West Gate translate to mean “Cooperate to Achieve.”

Featured: Chinatown’s South Gate, by architect Rupert Mok

Appearing as the spiritual gatekeepers at the south end of Chinatown, these twin dragons have been a fixture here since 2001, when architect Rupert Mok designed them inspired by a vision he had of two dragons soaring over a pearl as he crossed Broadway. While two dragons fighting is a recurring theme in Chinese art, according to Mok – the dragon above the pearl is the aggressor while its mate below is intended to be defensive or protective. Each dragon weighs 3000 pounds each and is 35 feet long.

Alliance President and CEO Sonya Kay Blake joined Paul Audley and Philip Sokoloski from FilmLA, Jamie Keyser and Carmenita Helligar from the Burbank Chamber of Commerce, Mike Stafford from the United-Chambers Of-Commerce, Ondre Seltzer from the Santa Clarita Valley EDC, and Mikayla Gibson from Valley Industry & Commerce Association to discuss the proposed increase in film tax credits from $330 million to $750 million in the Governor’s Budget. 🎬💰

The entertainment industry is one of the Valley’s largest economic drivers, but it has faced significant challenges—from the pandemic and strikes to wildfires and global competition. These struggles don’t just impact major studios; they also affect subcontractors, small businesses, and local restaurants and retailers across the state.

By working together, regional leaders are advocating for policies that strengthen the industry and support economic growth.

The Eaton and Palisades Fire Photo Project is a volunteer group of Location Managers connecting to Homeowners, Renters and Business Owners affected by the recent fires.

VICTIMS OF THE PALISADES AND EATON FIRES: Your house may have been scouted in the past by a location scout for film, tv or commercials. If possible, the Eaton and Palisades Fire Photo Project would like to connect you with the scout who took the photos so you can have them for insurance and FEMA claims, as well as for their sentimental value or to help an architect rebuild your home.
