Azerbaijan’s state oil company Socar plans to invest an additional $7bn in Turkey’s energy sector in the coming years, a company executive revealed.

Socar Turkey CEO Elchin Ibadov said the company had become Turkey’s largest foreign investor, with a total investment of $18.5bn over the past 17 years.

In 2018, 🇦🇿Azerbaijan made its largest one-time foreign investment in 🇹🇷Turkey by establishing the Socar Star Oil Refinery, which has an oil processing capacity of approximately 214,000 barrels per day.

Ibadov also revealed that Socar Turkey will soon begin producing environmentally friendly aviation fuel. He noted that the company had approved a roadmap for sustainable development as part of its long-term vision.

Socar also recently faced criticism following revelations by rights and transparency groups that Azerbaijani oil continues to be sold to Israeli buyers despite the ongoing war in Gaza.

Several international human rights organisations have described Israel’s actions during the conflict as genocide.

Last year, demonstrators threw red paint on Socar’s Istanbul headquarters, while others protested against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, accusing him of ignoring the controversial oil trade.

Although Turkey has enforced a complete trade embargo against Israel since May, oil shipments have continued through the Turkish port of Ceyhan.

Azerbaijani oil is transported to international markets via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, which is operated by British multinational BP.

Turkish officials have defended their position, arguing that Ankara merely hosts the pipeline and has no control over the final buyers of the oil.

They also claim that since May, no tanker has officially declared Israel as its destination. However, open navigation data shows that intermediaries purchase the oil, and the shipments eventually arrive at Israeli ports.

The Turkish defence ministry has said Ankara will establish military cooperation with the new Syrian administration.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, a Turkish defence official said Ankara was already in discussions with Syrian officials on the nature of their future military ties.

“In line with the directives of our president, we are engaging with our counterparts to establish strategic relations and foster cooperation across various fields,” the defence source said.

“Based on the needs identified during these meetings, the necessary support will be provided,” the official added.

🇹🇷Türkiye under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was a key backer of the Syrian opposition since the revolution began in Syria in 2011.

On 8 December last year, after 13 years of civil war, rebel fighters finally succeeded in toppling president Bashar al-Assad.

🇹🇷Türkiye has had longstanding contacts with Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, now the de facto leader of Syria.

Erdogan openly supported HTS and allied groups, during their winter offensive.

After emerging victorious in Damascus, Sharaa announced his intention to establish strategic ties with Ankara.

Last month, the Turkish president instructed his ministers to analyse shortcomings and challenges within Syria’s infrastructure and to propose solutions to help the new Syrian government.

As part of these efforts, Turkish energy sector officials visited the Syrian capital last week to prepare a report on the country’s electricity system, which has been plagued by frequent power outages.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is shining a light on Armenian prisoners of war held captive in Azerbaijan.

Mkhitaryan posted a video to social media wishing his fans a happy New Year and showcasing some of his achievements throughout 2024, including winning the Serie A with Inter Milan.

In the caption, Mkhitaryan wrote a message hoping for the release of Armenian prisoners of war in Azerbaijan who have been illegally detained, jailed and tortured.

“To my Compatriots,
I wish for a year of serenity and renewal for our homeland. I hope that this year we will see the release of all our Armenian prisoners illegally detained in our neighbour country’s prisons and their return home. I wish us solidarity and unity, hard work and creativity. May the souls of our national heroes protect our sacred lands.

Nothing survived the ethnic and religious cleansing of Nagorno-Karabakh. The genocide Azerbaijan conducted against the Armenians in Artsakh left nothing but memories of what once stood in the region; of what once stood embodying and representing the cultural, religion and history of Armenians in the region.

The Flag of the Arab Revolt, designed in 1916 by British diplomat Mark Sykes, is a powerful symbol of Arab unity and nationalism. This iconic banner features four colors, each representing significant Arab dynasties:

⬛️ Black for the Abbasid Caliphate (also associated with the early Rashidun Caliphate)

🟩 Green for the Fatimid Caliphate (also associated with Islam)

⬜️ White for the Umayyad Caliphate

🟥 Red for the Hashemites (also associated with the blood of martyrs)

This flag’s design has left an indelible mark on the Arab world, influencing the national flags of numerous modern Arab states. Its creation was a strategic move by the British to foster a sense of “Arabness” and fuel the revolt against the Ottoman Empire during World War I.
