Denali National Park & Preserve Is The “Destination Of The Week”

DENALI, ALASKA — Located at approximately Milepost 236 of the George Park Highway, Denali National Park and Preserve lies deep within the Alaskan Bush between Anchorage and Fairbanks. Home to Mount Denali, the tallest peak in North America, and abundant wildlife — grizzly bears, moose, Dall sheep and caribou, the park encompasses tundra, taiga and alpine ecosystems. Denali National Park is open year-round, with its main visitor season occurring mid-May through mid-September.

At the turn of the century, Denali was home to the Kantishna mining district. The area became known for its beauty and wildlife, which American conservationist Charles Alexander Sheldon fought to protect — specifically the Dall sheep that were being hunted. In 1917, Mount McKinley National Park was established to ward off poachers. During World War II, the area began to see early developments focused on attracting tourism and serving as vacation homes for military troops.

In 1976, President Jimmy Carter designated the area as an international biosphere reserve. Then in 1980, the park’s boundaries were expanded to more than six million acres – including Mt. McKinley and Denali Preserve — and renamed Denali National Park. With an extensive ecological community, Denali Village offers bird watching tours as well as ranger-led walks and up-close experiences with the environment and its inhabitants including Grizzly Bear, Wolf, Caribou and Dall Sheep. Bird Watching Tours, in partnership with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, offer guests sightings of the region’s hawks, cranes, eagles, and owls.

Guided tours allow guests to venture deep into Denali National Park while viewing wildlife and panoramic scenery while listening to educational narration about the land. Due to COVID 19, only tour open this summer is the Tundra Wilderness Tour that will reopen on May 20, 2021.

The most popular of the tours is the Tundra Wilderness Tour. The 7–8-hour excursion via motor coach journeys 62 miles into the Denali National Park to Stony Hill Overlook. The tour includes a narrated history of Park Road, scenery, and wildlife — Dall sheep, grizzly bears, wolves, and caribou. Full Tour operates June -September.

Another popular tour is the Denali History Tour (this tour is temporarily closed 2021 season). A 4.5-5 hour tour that focuses on the natural history, landscape and geology of the area, traveling to the Teklanika River, stopping at the Savage Cabin, the original rangers’ cabin, and Primrose Ridge. The tour operates May -September.

The Kantishna Experience Tour (this tour is temporarily closed 2021 season) is also one of the “not-to-be missed” tours of Denali National Park. This daylong tour (11-12 hours), takes guests 92 miles into the park, exploring the old gold mining town of Kantishna with a certified interpretive guide. Kantishna is the only tour to feature an interpretive ranger from the National Park Service. The tour operates June -September.

Another tour to check out is the Eielson Excursion Tour (this tour is temporarily closed 2021 season). Traversing 10 miles further into the Tundra, the Eielson Excursion brings visitors to remote places in the Alaska wilderness including the Eielson Visitor Center.

Other authentic Alaska experiences include Helicopter Flightseeing with an experienced local naturalist; the Denali Wilderness Safari on heated jet boats; Midnight Golf on the Black Diamond Golf Course; ATV trail rides, and Denali Fly fishing. (Many of the activities are temporarily closed due to COVID 19)

Denali National Park is approximately 240 miles north of Anchorage and 125 miles south of Fairbanks. It is accessible by car/RV via the lone Park Road or the Alaska Railroad that departs from Fairbanks and Anchorage. A train station is located within Denali National Park, with shuttle service from train station to area hotels.

Denali Park Village and Denali National Park are divisions of Aramark, which provides lodging, dining and activity options in some of the United States’ most beautiful and treasured places, including national and state parks and national forests.

Aramark seeks to create memorable experiences at destinations by bringing the best in environmental stewardship, sustainable cuisine and interpretive programs to the guests it serves. Climbing Into Fall – Cliffs & Canyons Of Moab, Utah, Offer Perfect Autumn Escape

MOAB, UT — The adventurous share one thing in common. They count on Nature to help them recharge and reach new personal highs and goals.

America’s red rock playground in Moab, Utah, offers one challenge after another. This region is widely regarded as one of the best rock climbing and canyoneering destinations in the world. These are two pursuits often cited for helping people overcome their fears and meet other challenges in their lives.

“When people stand at the bottom of a canyon wall waiting to climb, they’re already moving themselves mentally and emotionally out of their comfort zones,” says Cort Wright, General Manager of the Moab Adventure Center (www.moabadventurecenter.com/) in Moab. This is the go-to place for organizing adventures around Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park.

“Helping people learn the fundamentals of rock climbing is a favorite for our guides,” he adds. “Moab Adventure Center takes our customer experience and COVID-safety very seriously. We’ve targeted excellent locations and created some wonderful programs and protocols that allow our guides and instructors to provide experiences that appeal to young and old, regardless of skill level.”

Conquering a canyon is a sure bet for a small group and team-building activity, Wright explains why.

First, new challenges like rock climbing have amazing potential to build self-confidence and bring people closer together.
Second, when climbing, you have to do things that are outside of your comfort zone. When you’re all alone up there on the canyon wall, no one is next to you telling you what to do. You have to make decisions for yourself and by yourself. You learn quickly whether or not those decisions are good. If a decision turns prickly, you fail fast and move on. This process of making it to the top is all on your own.
Third, rock climbing is a great bonding experience. Maneuvering up – or down – a rock face is a personal challenge. Families, for example, get out of a child’s way – and head — and let them figure it out for themselves. When this happens, it’s magic! Children – and adults — come off the rock and feel so proud of themselves.
Fall is the perfect time to escape the heat and enjoy the usually dry climate. Rock climbing and canyoneering are offered here through November. Sessions are approximately five hours, morning or afternoon. All guides are trained and certified by the Association for Canyoneering Education (ACE). They have passed every advanced canyoneering and rescue course ACE has and have customized their knowledge to fit the needs of Moab Adventure Center guests and participants.

The per person rate for Moab Rock Climbing Introduction is $107 ($92 for ages 5-12). Participants at all skill levels learn through guided instruction how to improve face and crack climbing techniques, how to use and care for equipment, the techniques of knot and rope work and of basic belaying and descending. For details see https://www.moabadventurecenter.com/moab-rock-climbing

The per-person rate for The Ultimate Moab Canyoneering Adventure is $107 ($92 for ages 10-12). Guests learn how to rappel 90’ into a secluded grotto and then drop 120’ off a natural bridge to a natural spring. The experience is finished off with a 3.5-mile hike along a stream through a hidden canyon on the way back out to the Colorado River. For details see https://www.moabadventurecenter.com/moab-canyoneering

Private Moab Rock Climbing Lessons are perfect for small groups up to four participants. The group rate is $425 and hands-on classes run approximately 5 hours. See: https://www.moabadventurecenter.com/private-moab-rock-climbing-lessons

About the Moab Adventure Center – Moab Adventure Center is at the epicenter of nature-themed adventure, promising activities that include rafting, jet boating, stand up paddle boarding, hiking, mountain biking and hot air ballooning. Hummer safaris, rock climbing, canyoneering and horseback riding are popular. Many of these activities are conducted with guides, an arrangement that helps preclude the kind of damage to the land that can happen when uneducated visitors venture into areas where they shouldn’t be. Guides help people understand where they can move through back country with the least impact possible.

Moab Adventure Center is a division of Western River Expeditions (http://www.westernriver.com/) an adventure travel company headquartered in Salt Lake City, with operations and offices in Moab and Fredonia, AZ. The company is the largest single tour provider in Moab, Utah. The Moab Adventure Center is located at 225 South Main St., Moab, UT 84532. For information and reservations please call (435) 259-7019 or (866) 904-1163. The center also has a 2,000-square-foot retail space selling adventure related gear, clothing, maps and souvenirs.

Pebble Beach Company & Tiger Woods Release Plans For Reimagined Short Course Facility At Pebble Beach

New facility will include a nine-hole par-3 short course, a putting course, and an indoor/outdoor food and beverage venue overlooking one of the Resort’s most stunning views

PEBBLE BEACH, CA — Pebble Beach Company and Tiger Woods, through his TGR Design firm, recently released plans to transform the former site of Peter Hay Golf Course. Located directly between the Pebble Beach Pro Shop and Golf Academy, the new facility will include:

~A short course comprised of nine par-3 holes ranging in length from 47 to 106 yards and measuring 670 yards in total;

~A 20,000-square-foot putting course that can be set up in a variety of different hole and routing combinations; and

~A 5,000-square-foot food and beverage venue featuring a full kitchen and bar, indoor seating, and the resort’s largest outdoor patio positioned for expansive views of the short course, putting course, Carmel Bay, and Point Lobos

“We are thrilled to elevate the quality of our short course to a level consistent with our other world-class golf courses,” said Bill Perocchi, Chief Executive Officer of Pebble Beach Company. “You can see the genius of Tiger Woods and TGR Design come to life when you walk the site, the way it all fits together. I expect all aspects of this new facility will be very popular for junior golf events, Resort golfers, outings, resident hang-outs, and everything in between.”

Woods’ design philosophy for the short course is anchored on playability and creativity. His vision is that the course will draw new players to the game, bring families together, and provide a fun golf experience for players of all ages and abilities, while still offering a challenge for skilled players.

“Everyone who plays this golf course is going to enjoy the playability of it,” said Woods. “Golfers will have the choice to play nearly any club off most tees and around the greens, which will make them think and channel their creativity. It will also play differently from day to day depending on the tee and hole locations and wind direction. It’s going to be a lot of fun. I can’t wait to play it.”

In shaping the new course, Woods’ inspiration resulted in dramatic terrain movement and nine holes entirely distinct from the old course. He also reoriented the routing to better capture the views, with four holes now playing directly toward Carmel Bay.

In addition, Woods aligned each hole’s yardage to correspond with a significant year in Pebble Beach history, with accompanying plaques on each tee telling a story and creating the sense guests are walking amongst the Resort’s rich championship heritage as they play. The only exception is the course’s second hole, which will be an exact replica of the famous seventh hole at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

“Pebble Beach is such an iconic golf destination, we want guests to feel the entirety of that spirit when they play this course. We also know not everyone who comes to Pebble Beach will have a chance to play the U.S. Open course, so we wanted to create the opportunity for all visitors to experience one of its most famous holes,” Woods added.

The Grand Opening of the entire facility is currently scheduled for the Spring of 2021.

The Fairmont Grand Del Mar Is The “Hotel Of The Week”

By George Christopher Thomas, Travel Writer

SAN DIEGO, CA – The Fairmont Grand Del Mar in North San Diego County is a property that really needs to be experienced first-hand. From the moment you pull up to the guard gate, you know you are going to somewhere unique and special. The first fountain you see will transport you to Tuscany in Italy, and your journey into European sophistication will not end until you leave the Fairmont Grand Del Mar at the end of your stay. Every room is super nice and classy, staying true to the Tuscan theme.

There are several restaurants on site, including the award-winning Amaya, known for delicious seafood dishes and all-day dining. They are also the featured restaurant for in room dining, which is a perfect option for families with small children or that romantic dinner with your plus one.

The Fairmont Grand Del Mar is a world class facility, with numerous pools including an “adult only” one to keep cannonballs and extended games of Marco Polo at bay. There is an 18-hole golf course a pitching wedge away from the front desk, and the layout is designed artfully throughout the canyons and hillsides. Every hole has a unique character, but there are several that will make you reach for your driver to launch it off the elevated teeing area. From horseback riding to yoga classes to golf and swimming, the Fairmont Grand Del Mar has it all. In fact, once you pull into the resort, the chances are you will stay right there until your vacation comes to an end. Additionally, during this time of Covid-19, the Fairmont Grand Del Mar has taken every precaution and given every consideration to its patrons to make them safe. And always being on the cutting edge of the hospitality industry, they take your temperature by using infrared lasers and a magic computer that scans you as you stand in the entryway before going to the front desk to check in. I was totally intrigued, and asked Jessica on the way out how it worked. She said I did not have security clearance to know such things, but my temperature scanned in at 98.4 degrees Fahrenheit. I always knew I was just a little bit cooler than everyone else. (For more information and to book a room, please visit www.granddelmar.com).

California Kids Receive Essential Funding For Safe School Meals During Pandemic In State’s Final Budget

SACRAMENTO, CA — Recognizing the critical role of school meals to children’s well-being, especially in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, California’s legislative leaders and Governor Newsom have just passed a final budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year. It includes a $112 million allocation for California school districts providing free school meals during the pandemic, and another $10 million in funding for the Farm to School program and the Office of Farm to Fork.

“Governor Newsom, Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood), Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) and other state leaders have shown insightful leadership throughout this pandemic. This allocation to school food services is evidence of their principled focus on one of the state’s highest priorities: protecting kids from hunger,” says Adam Kesselman, executive director of the Center for Ecoliteracy, a nonprofit dedicated to education for sustainable living in K-12 schools.

According to Kesselman, school sites are effective, trusted and accessible hubs for free meals to school-age children. But the pressures of this pandemic have increased the overall costs associated with school meals, significantly increasing the costs of packaging, food, labor, training and safety, at a time when demand for food aid has increased eight-fold in some communities.

“Our policymakers are demonstrating that allowing kids to go hungry is not an option, and that now more than ever, we must do all we can to preserve a California for all by investing in our most vital community institutions,” said Kat Taylor, owner of TomKat Ranch and founder of the TomKat Ranch Educational Foundation. “Since the beginning of the pandemic, food service workers and schools across our state have stepped up to distribute meals, risking personal health and fiscal solvency to support struggling children and families. We are grateful to the Governor and Legislature for their leadership through the budget to help us meet this moment of acute need.”

This $112 million allocation will help districts cover these increased costs and ensure schools can continue to safely provide free school meals, which have become essential for many California families. The additional funding will also help leverage millions of dollars worth of federal reimbursements that could be lost if school nutrition programs serve fewer students or stop meal service.

Another $10 million dedicated to the Farm to School program will ensure schools continue to serve and source local produce. These funds will have a significant multiplier effect, helping agricultural producers and struggling local economies recover from the pandemic.

This budget season, a diverse coalition of organizations, including the California School Employees Association, the Center for Ecoliteracy, Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, NextGen California, No Kid Hungry and the Office of Kat Taylor, as well as school districts and leaders from dozens of organizations in agriculture, education and public health, rallied to advocate for a stronger COVID-19 budget response to ensure resilient funding for school meal sites.

Kesselman said, “This year’s budget is an important first step in acknowledging the increased costs school districts have faced due to campus closures. However, this renewed support for school nutrition should not end once students return to school. We must look to the Governor and state leaders to continue prioritizing school food in future budget negotiations.”

The Center for Ecoliteracy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to cultivating education for sustainable living. One of its key initiatives, California Food for California Kids,® supports systems change by improving children’s health, education and the state’s economy while teaching students where food comes from and how it reaches the table.

Celebrating Graduates In Ventura, CBF Productions Launches Concerts in Your Car™

Inaugural event will celebrate 2020 Graduates

VENTURA, CA — June is all about graduations but this year coronavirus restrictions have quashed most celebrations. Enter CBF Productions. The founders of crowd-pleasing favorites Boots & Brews Country Music Festival and the Winter Wine Walk have created a social distancing solution so that grads and their families can celebrate in style at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. Scheduled for June 12 & June 13, Congrats to Grads! will feature Ventura native Kyle, the popular rapper, singer, and songwriter, kicking off of the Concerts In Your Car series of live entertainment events.

Kyle1KYLE, who just released two new songs from his upcoming new album; “YES! (feat. Rich The Kid and K Camp)” and “What It Is,” skyrocketed up the charts with his chart-topping, 6x-platinum breakout hit “iSpy.” Rolling Stone magazine named KYLE as “one of the ten artists you need to know” and his now Gold-certified debut album LIGHT OF MINE was released in 2017. The following year, KYLE made his acting debut, starring in the Netflix hip-hop comedy The After Party. For more information on KYLE, please visit: www.superduperkyle.com.

“Even with social distancing, we wanted to give people a way to get out, celebrate and have some fun!” said Vincenzo Giammanco, owner of CBF Productions. “Our team got creative and decided to develop a new type of experience that will bring excitement to the summer of 2020 despite the pandemic. We plan on producing events offering a range of entertainment – more announcements will follow soon.”

The events will offer room for 500 cars per show and are designed to comply with all official restrictions. The combination of an extra high stage and five oversized screens will ensure a good viewing experience for everyone.

In addition to performances by Kyle, the 75-minute program will include a visual light show, multi-media entertainment and a video saluting the attending graduates. Sound will be distributed via FM radio. Tickets are sold in advance and online only and are priced starting at $49 per car with up to 5 people per vehicle. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Food Share, Ventura County’s largest food bank.

While no food is available for purchase at the concert, attendees will be provided with a comprehensive list of downtown Ventura restaurants that feature curbside pickup. With the fairgrounds just three blocks from the Ventura downtown district where many beloved local restaurants are located, the concert will provide a much-needed boost to local eateries.

The concert celebrating 2020 grads is just the tip of the iceberg for CBF Productions. The company is currently in negotiation with various cities throughout California to produce a series of live concerts throughout the summer. Other themes being considered are Comedy, Country Music, Top 40 and a show for Kids.
