Listen
By Gia Catherine Motti
First, they said they wanted law and order,
And I did not believe them.
So they took away the media I owned
So I would not find out they had lied to us.
Then they came for my body’s rights
So they could pass effective “moral” judgment.
Then they came to alter my
2nd Amendment Rights
So I would need a gun to be safe.
Then they came for my vote,
So that they could say they’re protecting it when
They’ve actually taken it away.
Then they came for the Protesters,
In “service” of the Law and Order
They themselves will not obey.
Then they came for my religion,
Saying Freedom of Religion is not the same
As Freedom from Religion.
Then they came for my marriage,
Judging it foul according to a religion
I did not follow-at least not willingly.
Then they came for my children
To put them to work. For learning is illegal now. For you.
Then they came for me,
Because I did not believe them.
I had never broken any laws before they took office,
But now, all that I am –
Loving, Kind, Loyal –
Is illegal.
I became the enemy because I would not give them power.
My country is gone because no one would listen to me.
The borders and elections closed because no one would listen to me.
My neighbors, citizens, children, wail in misery
Because no one would listen to me.
Then they painted me – so they could kill me,
Because no one would listen to me.
Now I am dead, because no one would listen to me.
There is no one left to hear you, because you would not listen to me.
-This was based on the theme and cadence of FIRST THEY CAME by Pastor Martin Niemoller. This poem above was written 7/3/2024.
Do not assume you are powerless just because they say you are. Know in your heart, for all the world, you ARE the powerful that they are trying to stop. But remember, no one succeeds alone. And your powers must match theirs for there to be a single chance of winning. It start now, and continues with VOTING.
More than words, it is ACTIONS that will save the day, or doom it. You know what side I am on.
