In the easternmost part of the Spanish archipelago, near the northern coast of Africa and the Sahara desert, lies Lanzarote. This island, formed from volcanic eruptions 15 million years ago, is covered in solidified lava flows, volcanic rocks, and black sand. It receives minimal rainfall, about 16 days a year, and temperatures on its black plains can reach up to 50°C (120°F).

Despite these harsh conditions, Lanzarote produces 400,000 to 600,000 bottles of wine annually. The island's winemakers, considered some of the hardest working in the world, developed innovative cultivation techniques in the 18th century. The last eruption of the Timanfaya Volcano in 1730, which lasted six years, forced many residents to emigrate. However, those who stayed discovered that the volcanic soil, known as picón, was excellent at retaining moisture, making it possible to grow crops.

Lanzarote is unique for its method of dry cultivation using volcanic soil, a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of its farmers.

Today it's hard for us to believe anyone could think of intentionally throwing two million tires into the ocean to try to help marine life, but in the 1970s it seemed like a good idea.

In 1972, Broward Artificial Reef Inc. (BARINC) devised a plan that would ultimately lead to an environmental disaster: combining the problem of getting rid of used tires with the desire to create an “artificial reef” with two million old tires.

The idea was welcomed with enthusiasm and attracted more than 100 volunteer boats who dedicated themselves to pouring tires in addition to the support of the USS Navy ship USS Thrush and the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. who donated tires and material to put them together.

Goodyear took advantage of the publicity opportunity by carrying his airplane to throw a gold-painted tire at the ceremony that kicked-off the project. A press release from the company stated that the tires "would be a haven for fish and other aquatic species" and highlighted that the waste tires have an excellent material for creating reefs.
