Saturday, January 18 @ 2:00PM | Academy Museum

Academy Museum of Motion Pictures: David Oyelowo gives a stirring performance as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in this powerful historical drama from Academy Award-nominated director Ava DuVernay. Avoiding the traditional approach to the Hollywood biopic, DuVernay’s film focuses on Dr. King’s struggle for equal voting rights, culminating in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery march. Bradford Young’s sensitive, nuanced cinematography is one of the highlights of the film, a Best Picture nominee that won Original Song for “Glory,” by Common and John Legend. On the occasion of the 10thanniversary of the film’s wide release, this program will conclude with a post-screening conversation that will dive into the craft of the filmmakers, DuVernay’s approach to biographical filmmaking, and a detailed history of the film's production.

Saluting our friend Josh Welsh of Film Independent, who had journeyed onto his glory. Josh was a long-time champion of independent film, from its development to its making to its distribution and amplification. He was trusted colleague of ARRAY’s senior leadership team and comrade in our work. We will always remember his passion, dedication and kindness. Our hearts are with the team at and with Josh’s family and many friends. He was one of a kind.

This Filmmaker Friday, we invite you to celebrate legendary filmmaker Haile Gerima and his ARRAY Releasing film, SANKOFA.

Re-released and restored in 4K through ARRAY, SANKOFA is a seminal work that has resonated across the African diaspora for nearly three decades. This work by Haile Gerima, which was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 43rd Berlin International Film Festival, follows a modern-day African-American model transported back to a West African slave plantation, powerfully confronting the romanticization of slavery in American culture.

Book a screening of SANKOFA through and visit sankofa101.org to learn more with our free learning guide.
