"The Karma Club" An Urban Novel
Current statistics report that every 2 minutes a woman in the United States of America is being r***d. With nearly 1 million reported cases on the rise, it appears that the 120 second window will be reduced to a r**e occurring every 90 seconds. Instead of 1 out of 6 women being a victim, the margin narrows to 1 out of 4.with the high rate and rise of this type of c
rime, the prosecution of ra**sts is shrinking. Due to a variety of reasons including unreported cases of r**e, approximately 5% (1 out of 20) of ra**sts will ever spend a day in jail. These alarming statistics coupled with poor or non-existent prosecutions, have left women feeling abandoned and alone, with a complete absence of support or retribution. Rather than endure the shame, embarrassment or ridicule of court trials, many victims have chosen to remain silent. In their silence, they pray that the day would come, when their ra**sts would “get theirs” or that Karma would keep its word and “what goes around would also come around to them.”
A growing movement called The Karma Club, has modified the predominating silent prayer of those waiting for a change. Victims of assault, generally women, have gained strength in numbers and joined resources to make sure ra**sts finally “get theirs.”Ironically enough, its founding members, if that’s what you can call them, never imagined it becoming the phenomenon it became. The club was formed, because one woman decided she would not let her attacker enjoy life free from the responsibility of his actions, while hers was shackled by fear and nightmares of the act of violence against her. It wasn’t as if Renee Lewis woke up one morning and suddenly decided to go after her attacker. The truth of the matter is, for nearly all of her adult life Renee did not recall the incident. She buried the memory so deeply into her subconscious, that if asked, she would not have identified herself as an assault victim. She was able to perpetuate the suppression, by diligently studying to become a doctor, and working feverishly in her career field once her degree was received. She thought life was good, but would soon realize that she was sadly mistaken. Renee was in her mid-thirties and had everything a modern African American woman could want; she had a loving mother, a successful career, a million dollar home, luxury cars, great friends and the double threat of beauty and brains. Instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was haunted by her past and had no idea why. A chance encounter with a stranger in Atlanta would cause Renee to resurrect the tragedy of that past. Her journey of self discovery in dealing with her assault of nearly 20 years ago will hit her so hard, she will find herself reliving those painful moments as if it happened yesterday. A young girl was r***d, and subsequently buried all thoughts of the act. Now as a grown woman many years later, Renee deals with the incident head on. Being a neurosurgeon requires a certain amount of knowledge, skill and precision. Renee’s time in the operating room fortified her mind, body and soul, sharpening her life skills, giving her great encouragement to face impossible odds. When others gave up on patients, she found a way to save them. A twenty year old r**e is a lifetime away for some; most people would give it up and move on. Renee came to the conclusion that her ra**st would pay. How to get back at him and not get caught was the only dilemma. The law be damned, there is no statute of limitations for such an act. She would find a way. With the help of her two closest friends, Renee carefully planned a punishment so intense, that it gave new meaning to the phrase “payback is a motherf**ker.” The assault was so atrocious, that ra**sts around the world were left fearful and paranoid. Many wondered if any of their victims were members of the Karma Club and if their names were placed on the “hit list.”
If you are a woman reading this book, we are not creating a blueprint of retribution or outlining ideas for you to commit various crimes, but revenge has no time line! If you are a man and you dare to read, you might want to embrace the belief that, “No means no, because - Karma is a motherf**ker!”
