"Was I in a Cult is a documentary style podcast that focuses on the survivor, telling a first-person tale of how an individual joined, lived in, and ultimately shed the trappings of the cult and started their life anew. People in cults in are not all the same lemming, lost, impressionable people. They are often middle-class, intelligent people, working moms, business leaders, artists, suburbanites and city dwellers. It may be difficult to believe, but seemingly anyone is susceptible to being manipulated into a cultic environment at the right time and the right place.
It’s been said that no one joins a cult. They join a movement or an idea, an idea of a better life, bettering themselves and the world. Before long, they are manipulated into a dangerous physical and emotional world they can’t easily escape. When these people do ultimately leave their cult they face the fear of a new world, one they may not have seen in years. They are alienated by their past community and many times have to reprogram their thinking. Ultimately, they overcome their past, but the scars of the manipulation often linger on.
Told in an engaging, inspiring and often entertaining manner, Was I In a Cult aims to redefine the word “cult” by showcasing survivor stories, giving them a safe space to share their story and be heard for the brave, inspiring people they are. Everyone has a story. This is just part of theirs."
