New York City has opened key portions of East River Park as part of the East Side Coastal Resiliency Project, a 2.25-mile flood protection system designed by Bjarke Ingels Group with Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects and ONE Architecture & Urbanism.

Led by the NYC Department of Design and Construction, the $1.45 billion project protects over 110,000 Lower East Side residents from storm surges and tidal flooding while reimagining the Manhattan waterfront as a connected network of raised green spaces.

The redesigned park features more than 600 trees, 21,000 new plantings, sports courts, lawns, picnic areas, and an amphitheater, with two new pedestrian bridges improving waterfront access. At its northern edge, BIG’s Solar One Environmental Education Center serves as a landmark hub for sustainability and community learning.

Blending infrastructure with public space, the project transforms climate resilience into an engaging civic experience along the East River.
