I wish someone told me this when I was younger.
When I hit perimenopause, my body completely changed.
I packed on 30 pounds.
My sugar cravings were so bad I would scoff an entire tub of ice cream in one sitting.
I was bloated and looked 3 months pregnant.
I started waking up every night at 2AM and couldn’t get back to sleep for hours.
I had hot flashes, sweats, brain fog, and mood swings that were ruling my life.
And the exhaustion was next-level.
What I’d always done—eat healthy, exercise, and take supplements wasn’t working anymore.
Doctors kept telling me, “You’re getting older. This is normal.”
But, common doesn’t mean normal.
Just because your friends are struggling with the same problems, doesn’t mean that’s how it’s supposed to be.
We think that menopause brain and hot flashes are “completely normal”.
And, that aches and pains, sleep issues, and feeling exhausted every day is a "normal part of aging”.
I didn’t want being miserable to be my new normal.
So I went looking for answers, and what I learned changed everything.
I worked with leading doctors and dietitians who helped me understand what was actually going on in my body, and that I had the power to control how I felt.
What finally helped me wasn’t a diet, and it wasn’t taking medication.
I didn’t need to “eat less and exercise more”.
The root cause of all my health issues was GUT HEALTH.
We hear about the importance of digestion, and the term “gut microbiome” on the news.
But, nobody really explains that our gut literally controls our blood sugar, hormones, and metabolism. (Basically—our ability to lose weight.)
Once I learned that, I finally understood why what I was doing wasn’t working!
When I got my gut health under control, everything changed.
No more sugar cravings and late-night shoving ice cream into my mouth.
The hot flashes, sweats, and mood swings went away.
So did the gas and bloating. I had a flat stomach again.
My sleep was amazing - no more getting up to p*e every night.
And, my energy went through the roof!
PLUS, I lost the 30 pounds (and a few pounds more) completely naturally without dieting or taking a GLP-1 medication.
I don't just “feel like myself again”. I feel BETTER in my 50’s than I did in my 30’s.
I know how frustrating it is to feel like a hostage in your own body and think nothing will ever work to lose weight and get healthy.
This is why I teamed up with dietitians to help other women get skinny.

But, to us, “skinny” is not about being thin or tracking numbers on a scale.

You don’t have the mental load of obsessing about your health and how you look all the time.
When you get your gut health and digestion under control, and eat foods that are right for your body, you lose weight naturally!
You can get your blood sugar under control and balance your hormones. (Whether you’re on HRT or not.)
And, if you’ve got high blood pressure and cholesterol issues, you can get that under control, too!
It is a totally different world when you know exactly what to do to lose weight and maintain better health for the rest of your life.
You feel great in your body and confident and in control again.

So, what I think is “normal” has changed.
I know menopause symptoms are not normal. You can get rid of them.
And it can be normal to sleep through the night and bound out of bed with energy in your 70’s!

He then transitioned into developmental editing, collaborating with novelists, screenwriters, and journalists like the amazing Gregg Hurwitz.
Together, we explore crafting narrative, developing plot and character, relishing language, and leveraging our curiosity. Jess brings in “incidentation”—a concept he learned from a great TV writer—and why sometimes “telling” over “showing” is the way to go. Then walks us through how to live in a story so it’s real to you, to get to the place where your characters make choices before you do. That’s how your story takes on its own internal drive.
