How to Shoot Day for NIght
Want to shoot night scenes without waiting for the sun to set? Let’s learn the day for night technique—a must-have skill for filmmakers that turns daytime into cinematic moonlight.
Here’s how you do it:
🎥 Step 1: Lower your camera’s exposure to create darker shadows. You can do this in camera or in post. Though it’s easier to do this in post so you always have control.
💡 Step 2: Desaturate & shift your image to blue/cool tones to mimic that night time feeling.
🎨 Step 3: Mask out the sky if it’s in your shot and don’t get the sun in frame 😅😅
How would you use this technique? 👇
Big thanks to @elementfilters for their ND set! We couldn’t have done this without them.
