I love this tshirt I worked with the incredible Steve Conley to design for a barista competition I hosted 18 years ago. It’s a transformer robot espresso machine, complete with an espresso grinder doggie sidekick!

So after a lifetime of pin-straight hair, I saw B**g Joon-Ho and was inspired to start getting perms in 2020.
This year, I was inspired again to change things up by Chef Edward Lee with his facial hair and now I’m here.

Before I was Your Korean Dad, I worked for over 20 years as a specialty coffee expert and cafe owner, teaching and speaking around the world to coffee professionals and coffee lovers about all things coffee. After leaving another relationship because I realized that my emotional needs weren’t being met, I decided to start dating again but with a different focus: Instead of seeking a deep connection with someone, I’d just look for someone who was simply nice and kind. Looking for that deep connection, one that goes to the core of who I am and who they are… that has consistently left me feeling unfulfilled and lonely because what I was putting in felt unreciprocated.
So with that plan in mind, I started dating using the apps. I’ll date casually, without focusing on a long-term relationship. Just date.
I met some truly wonderful women through that time, but I found myself asking one particular person out again and again. I thought, “She’s really nice, really attractive, and I enjoy our conversations a lot.” All of that was great, but I still had my plan.
It was after Madeline pointed out that I kept mentioning that particular person in conversation that I stopped to realize that though I wasn’t looking for that deepest of connections, it had somehow found me.
And two years ago, I invited her to go girlfriend-boyfriend with me.
I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that every day or two, I find myself telling Kimmie that she’s the best person that I’ve ever met. Every single thing about her is what I always craved and needed in a partnership, even and especially when I didn’t even know that what I craved and needed. Well, every single thing except I like most kinds of sandwiches and she only likes one or two kinds.

Happy 19th birthday !!! Also, congratulations on your high school graduation a few weeks ago. My baby daughter is heading to this fall but that’s not why I’m so proud of her every day. I’m proud because she is who she is! 😍🥰

Access to the internet and such vast knowledge should have humbled us and given us the awareness that we as individuals can only know and understand so much… but instead we all act like we already know what we need to know and only others have lessons to learn.

One of the most tricky parts of this “Your Korean Dad” identity is that I chose to develop a content stream that prioritizes the viewer as the main character with me there only to be there for them. It’s not the way anyone else seems to operate so I’ve had very few resources or examples from others to pull from, except for the mentors from my adolescence and young-adulthood.
It’s also what makes this work feel all the more my calling in life.

We’ve all been taught that when a person tells you that you’ve hurt them, your impact means more than your intentions.
Why don’t we seem to know to apply this principle to wider conflicts and crises?

My friend has passed on.
In many ways, Gianni taught me a lot about growing older as a man. Like most people, I’ve met many men who seemed to struggle with meaning and purpose in their lives as they grow beyond retirement age. Gianni was always happy just to be around you and everyone in the coffee community as some blend of cheerleader and mascot. I never saw him interfere in that way I’ve seen so many men who fight to stay relevant, except maybe the way he’d insist on taking photos with people. In that way he was a living symbol of exactly the sort of patriarchy that our coffee community was trying to get away from, but somehow we let him be himself and accepted him.
Anyone who spent much time around him experienced one thing from him over and over: he’d pull you aside and hype you up. He’d tell you how he’s seen the work you’re doing and he wants you to know how important you are. All he seemed to want in return was for you to believe him.
I could say a lot more about Gianni, but I only knew him for the last 15 years. I’m just glad that at least a couple of those times he pulled me aside and hyped me up, I got to tell him something like, “Gianni, I see how you’re always trying to make everyone feel good… not about you or some other thing, but feel good about themselves. I’m so glad you’re here and you’re a truly special person.”
