As his plane descended for landing at OโHare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois after traversing 8,916 miles on the 6th of October 2017, MarJhun felt his heartbeat beating like a drum. At that moment, he knew he is in a better place with a lot of opportunities and he was so excited to write the new chapter of his life in the United States.
โItโs more fun in the Philippinesโ. This is the slogan of the country where he came from. It is, indeed, fun to stay in the Philippines from white beaches, amazing marine life - perfect for scuba diving and snorkeling, unique delicious cuisines, interesting street foods and many things you can do in the Philippines for a very reasonable price. It is a haven for everyone with over 7 million tourists visiting the archipelago each year. You will love the Philippines for so many reasons just like the foreign nationals who decided to stay for good in the country. Ironically, everyone loves to stay in the Philippines, but not the Filipinos!
The Philippines is a third world country. Over 10% of the population in the country migrated to over 200 countries and territories looking for better opportunities their home country could not offer. About a quarter of the population is living below the national poverty line. It is indeed a beautiful country but with limited opportunities to offer for its people.
MarJhun Pyo, also known as MJ, was born and raised in a remote rural town in Bohol. Like most other kids, he traveled to school and returned back home by foot. Back then, the common form of public transportation were buses or jeepneys. MJ is not from a well-off family. He needed to stretch his meager allowance so he could help pay for school. Sometimes, he took farmwork offers to earn money for his study. When he moved to high school, he had to walk 5 miles to get to school because there are no school buses for public schools in the Philippines. With perseverance and hardwork, he graduated on top of his class. This was his passport to apply for the top scholarship in the country where only the top 5% of the graduating class are qualified to apply. He took the test and passed it. He earned his Masterโs degree in the same university where he finished his Bachelorโs degree and graduated Summa Cum Laude. While working as a public school teacher on weekdays, he went to a university on weekends to work on his PhD. He spent all of his time between work, school and family. He always believed that everyone is capable of changing their future --- that everyone can achieve their dreams with hardwork. While teaching in the Philippines, he radiated hope and inspired his poor Filipino students to do better in school. He has coached and mentored his students to participate in several Mathematics and Science competitions. He established a very good reputation in the STEM department in his school before he left and decided to continue his career in the United States.
