Over the last year someone made a pile of cash selling ring lights to people for their zoom calls. When watching the news I often see the rihglight reflection in picture frames, windows glass cake displays, glasses etc.
Give them points for trying. But... If the ring light can be seen in a mirror or window or picture frame reflection, you aren't using as a ring light. At best it is a not so efficient key light or a fill.
The correct way to use a ring light is to point the lens through the ring. That is why they are made that way. This give an all encompassing light from every angle.
In macro photography.. (think close ups of a bee on a flower) you use the ring light as the key light. It gives a nice soft even light.
In glamour photography it is usually used as a strong fill light. Filling in the eye sockets and softening the skin texture ( wrinkles and pores) as a smoothing light.
So now you know. I expect to see talking heads on every network to up their lighting. NOW
