is an independent producer who recently produced Adamma Ebo's HONK FOR JESUS, SAVE YOUR SOUL alongside Daniel Kaluuya's 59% and Pinky Promise, which sold to Focus and MonkeyPaw out of Sundance 2022.

Kara is the reason I was brought on to HONK as a physical producer and in the process of making that film, she became a bud. She is fun to work with, in fact, she is a great time! (direct quote from Kara!)

Regina Hall and Sterling K. Brown give phenomenally funny performances worthy of an hour and 42 minutes of your time.

The film is out today, September 2nd, in theaters and on ! Check it out and tell me what you think!

Kara also produced Celine Held & Logan George’s VANISHINGS AT CADDO LAKE alongside M Night Shyamalan, which is currently in Post Production.

Currently, Kara is producing IF YOU WERE THE LAST starring Anthony Mackie and Zoe Chao, as well as Laurel Parmet's THE STARLING GIRL starring Eliza Scanlen and Lewis Pullman.

Past productions include Celine Held & Logan George’s TOPSIDE, as well as Alex Fischer & Eleanor Wilson’s SAVE YOURSELVES!, which premiered in competition at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Upcoming projects are David Craig and Brian Crano’s I DON’T UNDERSTAND YOU, starring Nick Kroll and Andrew Rannells, as well as Executive Producing Hannah Peterson's THE GRADUATES alongside Chloé Zhao.

Her incredible short film work has been nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival, and has screened in competition at Sundance Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, New York Film Festival, and in the Narrative and Midnight Competitions at SXSW. Her award-winning short film CAROLINE was short-listed for the 2019 Academy Awards.

Gems from our chat include:

•Why she loves working with first time directors and the advice she has for them
•The value of learning by making mistakes
•The deep respect we share for crew and how much of themselves they give to bring stories to life.

Amy Baer currently serves as President of Landline Pictures, a label within MRC Film that makes feature films about and for the 50+ audience. Launched in 2020, their  first movie, JERRY & MARGE GO LARGE, directed by David Frankel, who did MARLEY & ME, is streaming now on Paramount+.

Starring Bryan Cranston and Annette Bening, the film is based on the true story of a married couple who used a loophole in the Massachusetts State Lottery to win $27 million. I watched it with my dad a few weeks ago and it’s incredibly fun and heartwarming.

While Amy grew up in a showbiz family, she still had to carve her own path. She wasn’t clear of what she wanted to do, but one thing was certain: she did not want to be an actor.

During her stint at CAA in 1988 as an assistant to the late Jay Moloney, she discovered the studio executive route.

She eventually became President & CEO of CBS Films. She also spent 17 years at Sony Pictures Entertainment, where she oversaw impressive films such as:

MY BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING (1997)
ADAPTATION (2001)
S.W.A.T. (2002)
SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE (2003)
THE HOLIDAY (2006)
MONEYBALL (2011)

Amy’s entrepreneurial spirit led her to raise seven figure development fund and launch Gidden Media, one of the industry’s only female-led, independently financed content incubation companies.

Her first film as a producer was the 2013 hit LAST VEGAS, starring Michael Douglas, Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline, which grossed $136MM worldwide.

A devoted wife and mother of two, Amy has also given her time as Board President of since June 2018.

Some gems from this episode include:

* Soaking up as much as you can when you are in a job you dislike
* How leaving the studio system forced her to develop an entrepreneurial muscle
* And how to not take things personally

🎉Celebrating a milestone episode 75 this week with the simply marvelous Jordana Mollick!🥳

Jordana is a producer and co-founder of the super prolific Semi-Formal Productions alongside Michael Showalter.

They are having quite an amazing moment right now- with Jessica Chastain winning the Oscar for The Eyes of Tammy Faye and the tremendous response to The Dropout with Amanda Seyfried as Elizabeth Holmes.  They also have FOUR series in contention for Emmys this season- The Shrink Next Door, The Dropout, Search Party and I Love That For You which star Vanessa Bayer and Molly Shannon).

Originally from Milwaukee, Jordana carved her own path working across theater, film, TV, and digital. She even had a stint as a literary manager.

Jordana’s candor remind me that no matter how high we climb, impostor syndrome and self doubt plague us all.

This week, we dive into:

•The importance of embracing your firsts, •The parallels between producing and motherhood
•How to avoid the traps of self comparison.

Jenifer Westphal is the Founder and CEO at Wavelength, an Emmy-Winning film studio committed to developing, producing and financing films that tell great f**king stories.

She previously worked on political campaigns and engaged in philanthropic work, raising funds for various individuals and events.

Then one day, she had raised and homeschooled her now 3 adult sons, including one on Autism Spectrum. Once the youngest had gone off to college, she looked around her empty next and said to her husband, “I’m going to start a film company.”

She made the leap into producing. In her 50s.

And that’s when Wavelength was born. Which makes it even that more impressive that she was named one of Variety’s “10 Producers to Watch” in 2020.

Since then, Jenifer has executive produced countless award-winning documentary and independent films, including:  Knock Down The House, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, and Emmy-winners Feels Good Man and Athlete A.

She also fosters female talent, first-time filmmakers, and creators of color via the WAVE Grant program which give $5,000 in seed funding towards a short.

A few takeaways from our chat include:
* Navigating agism
* How motherhood and politics prepared her to be a producer
* What financiers expect and want filmmakers to know

Today in Film History:

April 19 1927 - Actress Mae West was found guilty of “obscenity and corrupting the morals of youth.”

Mae West, the famously sultry starlet of the silver screen, got her start in Hollywood in the most Mae West of ways.

She started in a stage play in New York titled S*x where she was charged with and found guilty of “obscenity and corrupting the morals of youth.”

Religious and public figures, as well as regular citizens, protested the racy posters promoting “S*x with Mae West.” Police eventually shut the production down and arrested her. She was fined $500 and sentenced to 10 days in prison, no small thing at the time. But she gained so much publicity for it that it effectively launched her film career, making her one of the most bankable stars of Old Hollywood.

During her Hollywood career, West continued to use her blunt and unapologetic s*xuality to build a reputation as a rule-breaker and s*x symbol and her influence was legendary. Decades later, Madonna would base plenty of her image and brand on Mae West.
