USAID shuts down worldwide

THE United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will officially shut down this Friday, February 7, 2025.

This means that the agency will stop all operations worldwide except for a few essential programmes and leadership roles.

A statement from USAID confirmed that most direct hire employees will be placed on administrative leave and only personnel responsible for critical functions will continue working and they will be informed by Thursday, February 6, 2025.

For USAID staff working outside the United States, the agency in coordination with the Department of State is preparing a plan to bring them back home.

The statement further revealed that USAID will pay for their return travel within 30 days and will also end contracts for workers whose roles are not considered essential.

The agency will however allow some exceptions in special cases such as employees with school aged children, medical needs, pregnancy or safety concerns adding that more details on how to request for an exception will be provided soon.
