Many of us drink coffee every morning without ever understanding the process behind how it got to our cups and how climate change is drastically affecting that process. Conservationists predict that in 10 years there will be no more coffee in the Oaxaca region of Mexico - affecting global supply.

We followed Los Macuiles Copalita SPR De RL, a local community conservation company dedicated to forest restoration in Mexico, to better understand this threat and how communities and organizations in the region are dedicating their lives to help ensure there is coffee production for future generations to come.

A few months back we shot a short climate film, Voices of Mida Creek, for , our partners, highlighting a mangrove conservation effort in Mida Creek, Kenya. It was incredible to document the efforts of one woman, Arafa Salim Baya, and witness her inspiring her community to take action, and learn more about what motivates her to wake up every day on a mission to protect the environment. Our day with Arafa was our best. Her energy was magnetic, her smile contagious and she propelled so many from her community to come together to protect their natural ecosystem. Just a few weeks back we caught wind that the world & Mida creek lost a friend to conservation and community due to complications with COVID. We’ll miss you Arafa. Thanks for everything you've done to keep people passionate about restoring the environment. Your legacy lives on...

This past year, Backroads worked with Dave's Killer Bread and Tastemade to produce an award-winning video series called "Second Chance Employment." The series highlighted Dave's Killer Bread’s mission to provide meaningful employment to those with a criminal history. In this episode, Chef Soni Shine from San Diego demonstrates how learning to be a chef has helped her make a living and transformed her life.

Backroads Pictures film "Sounding the Alarm - America's Climate Crisis" was accepted to the Florida Environmental Film Festival happening March 13, 2021.

Award-winning filmmaker, Peter Goetz, captures America's faces and voices, shot in 2020 leading up to the presidential election. Goetz and the Biden campaign made history, producing the first national climate spot to run during a presidential election. But this film dives deeper into the American climate crisis to explore the lives of the people who are sounding the alarm, worried about their grandchildren's future, asking, 'If not us, then who?"

“I just want a president that’s gonna tell the truth. Not Lie. Say what he means and love people. I don’t care if they are black, white, rich, or poor – love people.” – Velma, one of Florida’s first climate refugees.

Last year during the election, the Biden for President hired Backroads Pictures to uncover American stories in the battleground states affected by the climate crisis. Our last stop on the months-long trip was in Jacksonville, Florida, to meet Velma and her family.

Velma and Amirah deal with flooding every day because of rising sea levels in Florida. This part of Jacksonville lies on the flood line and is a ticking bomb waiting for the next big hurricane. Velma waded through gator-infested waters to higher ground during Hurricane Irma. The crisis is upon the residents in Florida with no solutions in sight in a state with leaders ignoring the climate crisis. We appreciate the kindness Velma showed us by opening up her home and sharing her story with our team.

We stand with President Biden and our leaders to build unity, peace, and healing for our country and planet.

Meet Donovan, a beekeeper whose family honey business is challenged by Arizona's high desert temps, melting the hives and killing his bees. He's passionate about his craft, and knows he must adapt.

Hearing Donavan's story reminded us that we have to pay attention to those who live close to the land to understand the changing climate's impacts. Thanks to Donovan for inviting us into his home and sharing his story.

Backroads Pictures Founder, Peter Goetz, teamed up with an incredible team to bring 'Blood on the Wall' film to life last year for National Geographic. Peter spent months down in Mexico's cuts with director Nick Quested and a rascally crew of local legends. The team opened up special access to the Mexican drug cartels, Central American immigrant caravans, and courageous Mexican photo-journalist laying their lives on the line for this story. Oscar-winner Fisher Stevens (Before the Flood, The Cove, Racing Extinction) and Oscar-nominated author/director Sebastian Junger (The Perfect Storm, Tribe, Restrepo) were part of the crew to bring such a powerful film to the screen. The resilience and optimism of the subjects showcased true grit, sacrifice, and suffering.
